Just tried to renew my insurance with Aviva so informed them about fitting solar panel. Renewal declined as solar not fitted as standard by fiat. Not allowed under any circumstances as a modification. Wonder how many are not insured because of this?

Try CAMC if you're a member if not, try LV
I believe Aviva are a little renowned foe their pickiness on mods...including decals
There was a thread of here nor long back, sure that was Aviva
According to our current insurer, Aviva aren't motorhome specific and therefore such issues arise with mods
Also, try Performance Direct, our previous MH didn't have a factory fit and it was accepted as a mod with no Increase in premium

I've also just had my NFU renewal declined under slightly different circumstances.
I was insured with NFU for the past two years but moved to LV when I got their very expensive renewal quote in July. I moved my motorhome to my LV joint car policy which now expires in September 2023.
Having just had the LV renewal notice which was decent, I thought I would give NFU another try and asked for a quote to see if they were competitive.
NFU refused to insure me from September because I'm now treated as a "new customer" despite having sent me a renewal quote just three weeks ago!! Insane rules.

So. I'm sticking with LV who have been excellent and you can actually talk to really helpful people 7 days a week.

UPDATE: just run an online quote with CAMC and they got within £20 of my LV= quote so pretty good.

Comfort are underwritten by Aviva they have never asked about mods or solar panels.
That's why I wondered how many are not insured and don't realise.
Anyway got a quote from Adrian flux so now a bonafide campervan. By telling them we are now retired price went down £250 now £200 cheaper than Aviva renewal before they knew about solar panel. And get 270 days abroad use instead of 180. Whatever use that may be 🤷‍♂️

Sounds like a good result. Did you try any of the comparison sites?

Comparison sites aren't interested in modifications only standard cars or vans.
As soon as you put in windows etc most don't quote. Them that do are normally an arm and two legs.

We got a really good quote this year but that is on a factory built MH. I hadn't thought about it being home converted

I was going to suggest Adrian Flux, glad they sorted you out, be aware however, that you will need to sort out an "Agreed Valuation" with them if you want it covered to its full replacement value 😉

Cheers

Unfortunately it will never be worth how much it would cost to replace. In today's market to get everything I would want including euro6 engine I would need to collect the life insurance policy on swmbo. I'm not sure if l would still want a motorhome then.

I've gone with aib thus year their breakdown was best

NFU branches are independent businesses. I think it is some form of franchise. Some of them really don’t want motorhome business and throw up all sorts of reasons to get rid of you. Other branches work really hard to to get and keep your business. I have found the Brockenhurst Branch very helpful and have heard Chichester are also helpful. However NFU do seem to be getting jittery about solar panels.

Don’t wait for your insurer to ask you about modifications and additions, if you read the small print it is usually your responsibility to tell them.

When I spoke to comfort yesterday to sort the insurance, they actually asked about extra decals! Told them about the hydraulic levellers as a modification (again) and they simply noted it

Interestingly when asked about "extras" I've mentioned hydraulic levellers to each of the insurance companies when getting a quote. None of them could find these on their list of accessories. Amazing as these cost up to £5K and are a major addition to any motorhome. Had the same response with rear air suspension. Simply not on the standard list these companies use.

No the problem is all insurance companies are utter scum
Most insurance companies are financial institutions trying to make as much money as they can. Their ideal customer gives them a yearly sum and costs them nothing. If they are landed with a bill and can find an excuse not to pay it they are likely to jump on it.

Expensive extras probably make little difference to the book values insurance companies pay out to customers so the value of extras is not really an issue. However extras that might cause a big third party claim which they can’t wriggle out of are a different matter. Hence a £5000 levelling system worries them less than a £100 solar panel that might have been poorly attached.

Make sure you tell them everything, if they don’t record it that is their decision. They always say they record telephone conversations so you can always ask them to prove you didn’t tell them by releasing the recording. Whenever I have a conversation with an insurance company or broker I make a note of the date and time and a note about what the conversation was about.
