Hi,

Some advice if possible please,
For the first time ever we have an automatic gearbox, it is the ZF 9HP .
We are about to put it in storage and apart from leaving the handbrake off, should it be left in Neutral or Park ?

Thanks in advance.
Pam

It wont hurt to leave it in park . That is what it designed to do .

Generally park is a mechanical pawl and can be left for long periods. It's best to leave the handbrake off and use a 2nd mechanical method, such as chocks. There should always be at least two devices stopping you moving when parked.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply, much appreciated.

Kind regards

A Pawl?
a pawl?
Wot?
For them of us wot drove 'orrible British cars in the 60's(1960's cheeky) the pawl is the bit of metal wot drops into the toothed bit of a handbrake wot makes that' orrible noise when you pull on the handbrake without pressing the release button.
I call that behaviour, 'apawl'ing.
I'll get me coat.

Thanks, I’ll keep my eyes peeled for one

A pawl is also used on extension ladders, it's the bit (or more correctly the 2 bits) that holds the extension section in place on the rungs (or rounds of the ladder)

Most people in the world who drive automatics wonder why the English keep pulling that lever.

Americans call the hand brake the emergency brake, I guess because that's the only circumstance they'd ever use it.

Asking from a position of ignorance (no experience of the Ducato or other drivetrain) can the ignition key be removed if the lever is not in ‘Park’?

With my VW Amarok with ZF 8 Speed Auto, it’s impossible to to take it out unless it’s in Park - something called a ‘Safelock’ feature apparently.

Same with my VW

I do put the handbrake on, it helps to lower the wear on the pawl and keeps the handbrake mechanism from seizing up

Doesn’t it make the brakes disks jam together,? Or is it a brake on the drive shaft?
Only asking as I had a Rover SDI which was parked on a slope for 3months waiting for engine bits , handbrake locked the brakes up solid on back axle, big hammer was needed😜😜😜

I use the handbrake if it's in daily use, if parked for a long time it's best left off

If it is a newish Ducato with the 9 speed auto (mine is) I don't think you have the choice between Park and Neutral - it has to be Park.. I tried last weekend to leave it in Neutral rather than Park because somewhere I had read that the pin that holds it in Park (ignoring the pawl debate for the moment), were alleged to suffer if left under prolonged stress. I wasn't sure whether this was a real thing or not, but in any event when I tried to leave it in Neutral rather than Park, with the handbrake off, and the wheels chocked, on a very slight slope, I was unable to do so. I could only select Neutral with the keys in the ignition. Of course it could have been operator error. Not the first time.

Sounds like the VW ‘Safelock’ system then - no key removal unless in Park position.

To avoid stressing the pawl park in neutral, then chock the wheels and select park, then there's no strain but it's still locked if it slips

I have a MB E class which has the ZF 9 speed auto whuch is the rear drive version, the Ducato has transverse drive version (I think? )
If in D, as soon as you open the drivers door it selects P and puts the park brake on . .
You cannot select N without the ignition on (don't have to have the engine running)
All most all vehicles now operate very autonomously . . auto wipers, lights etc to try and compensate for those drivers who are brain dead on how to properly operate their vehicles controls.

All safety related I suppose.
