if you pay for services?:)

Lots of threads on here about paying for Aires etc. we also like to be a FLT if we can but we have discussed if we really are getting a free pitch if you have to pay for the services or EHU?

The term FLT was first coined here by weejocky and he referred to people who outstayed their welcome, in free places really taking the pee, stopping weeks on end abusing facilities and ruining it for everyone.

Some members who like to wildcamp have taken to calling themselves FLT's. But they are not really FLT's they are just wild campers and wild parkers.

Found the thread. He got a hard time for posting it
No wonder he gots some stick he was complaining about a Motorhome parked in a carpark for 4 days not exactly taking the pee like some do for weeks on end.

I quite like being called an FLT, if I can stop without paying nice, don't mind paying for water better if it's free. Also use paying Aires if it's where we want to be. Don't get sites, crammed inside a chicken wire fence with hundreds of others however we do use them when necessary and sometimes when meeting up with friends.

Sums us up exactly.

Last time we met up with friends, in another Arto, was on a campsite and there were only us + one other MH on the banks of a river - and no it was not about to flood.

One more week and it’s 3 months in Spain wild camping.
I laugh if someone calls me a FLT.
Got to love a wild camp view such as this as I write.

I am a FLT and only pay if I want to hang out with rich Funster motorhomers like GBS or SMB or Champers or Ven or Les for a night or two.

Other than those rare occasions I free load with like minded souls like Caravan Alan or Tinhat.

I also used to pay to empty my black tank.

Won't be doing either for a few months now... :crying:

The rest of the time I free load up in Central Portugal where the land owner lets me use his water and dump point for nothing.

JJ

We don't stay on sites but we are not freeloaders, neither are we tossers.

I think it's a derogatory term and I don't like it.

Some people here say it's meant in an affectionate way... yet under the guise of friendly joshing there's a nasty edge to what is being said.

Posted earlier on another thread and edited here, (because I feel lazy and it`s "time for wine"). (y)

I have differing reasons for why I use a particular (type of) camp site (or not). "Wild" camping, FLT, whatever, can be perceived as "p$ss taking" especially when it is blatantly a long term thing. But discretionary use of a "space" wherever it may be located for a finite period (say 24-48hrs?) Does not in my mind have any ongoing effect on the "progress of man". The other thing I cannot understand is WHY make the expensive purchase of a Motorhome, and then treat it as you would a "Static" or Mobile Park Home?. The purpose of the Motorhome is that it is "mobile" and thereby designed to be used in that manner. Short stays, move on?. Having said that, I admit that in the early 90`s I had my R-V parked on a Rig Construction site for nearly 6 Months, My excuse was lack of decent accommodation close by, and the need to be "mobile" at the end of the build, ready for the next phase.

And of course many, myself included in the past, have used them as "accommodation" In campsites in Spain and Portugal etc; to avail us of generally warmer climate in the "winter" months. In that regards they could be regarded as having a "dual role"?.

Sounds about right. I consider myself a fully fledged and proud FLT yet on occasions I use campsites and paid Aires. For me it's about maximising your motorhome parking/stopping opportunities and not being restricted to camp sites.

We am the same, we tend to work out what we would like to do and see, so if it means paying for a night to stop here and there we do so. But I have to admit I do also like parking up for a night in an aire or wild for free there is something quite satisfying about it. Also it gives us more cash to spend on 1 euro beers in Spain.

We choose where to stay based on where we want go. If it’s free, fine, if we have to pay, fine.

One thing we try very hard to avoid, regardless of cost, is being in close proximity to lots of other motorhomes or caravans. Quite often we find that this means paying for a site, as they are often quieter than the so called “wild” spots, particularly in Spain and Portugal in winter.

Just been looking at the site fees being charged in Sicily, most close for winter, those that stay open chance their arm. I thought CMC site fees were dear enough and we choose not to use them unless there is no alternative.
I freely admit that if I had to build in the cost of site fees, along with diesel, the inevitable toll/ferry costs on occasion, then a long stay away would be stretching our affordability to do it for long duration's.
Dare I say , but sometimes its cheaper to buy a flight and a package holiday or rent a flat, which is what we were trying to escape in buying the MH.
Yea I know, wash my mouth out with soap!

reading the original thread shows how the prices of cl/cs have doubled or more in under ten years (fiver then according to munchy)

Unfortunately I'm off to Portugal without van shortly £13.00 outbound and £18.00 inbound £100 B&B, although it grieves to leave van on the drive cash saved will pay for solar panels and I still get away to hopefully sun, also limited due to work commitments.

Love the pics from PhilandMena the vans in the desert remind me of the film Independence day

We are def FLTs !
We do use sites if stopping somewhere for an extended time if nowhere local to our intended stopping spot but other than that ( a day or two ) we just find a nice spot to plot up
We can survive without hook up for weeks if needs be
The battery / solar panels were chosen to sustain extended off grid staying..

£34-00, to (try) and sleep on a crowded stinking services?. Who would`nt be an FLT?.

It`s a question of discretion, and keeping as low a profile as possible, not because you are "avin a laugh", But because keeping the "jobsworths" out of the loop will help preserve the situation for longer.

It`s definitely becoming harder to find places to stop, even some of the Trading estates are using private parking "stormtroopers", Not even trucks can park up on some now. The odd supermarket is sometimes available but most are control by the aforesaid Parking Co`s. (Thats where all the one time Rogue Clampers, went upmarket when the law changed)

Not much riles me but the term FLT gets my goat. :swear:

To those keyboard warriors who feel that its acceptable to call me a tosser, try showing up at my motorhome door & say it to my face, no takers? Thought not.
You'll need a bloody good orthopaedic surgeon. :whistle2::whistle2:

I live in the wilds of Scotland & in an area which really lends itself to wild camping, we even have the blessing of the forest rangers as we know how to behave & what is expected of us, so I have no qualms about wild camping.

Now on actual holidays, I prefer a really good CL or site, especially in in the depths of Englandshire, its the only way we feel relaxed when in highly populated areas.
It's not about money, its about the deep seated feeling of being in remote terrain which many motorhome folks enjoy.

Have a nice day everyone. :sun:
