Gosh...what a palaver...I'm 70 next June....does one just have a medical and send the letter from the doc with the licence application or what Our MH has just been up-plated to 3700 kg???

You have a medical. You can ask your GP or go to a specialist medical place. There are quite a lot around as HGV and bus drivers etc need regular medicals. You will have to pay either way but our GP practice very expensive so we went elsewhere.

It will not be a letter from the dr, there is a special form that the doctor has to fill in. You send that with the application form to DVLA. If all is well health wise then you should get your new licence fairly quickly. The delay comes if it is decided that the application requires a review by DVLA medical board. I understand that this "medical board" is one person who turns up every 3 months!

You will be sent the forms automatically but you can get them from a main post office if you want them earlier.

Good thread but am still confused. I'm 70 April 2018 and drive a 3.5ton Rapido. Do I apply for just a normal licence & if I do will I then lose my C1? Also I am on Ferry to Spain Jan 18 for 5/6 months. How does one apply 6mnths early as mentioned earlier in this thread? I can find no info about that on .Gov UK.

Sorry @Steveboy it is 90 days but I think we got the paperwork together in the March ready to send off early April which was 90 days before.

If you wish you can renew online but you will not retain the category C1 on your licence, That's ok if your MH below the magic 3500 kg.

You will be able to renew online whilst you are away but I'm pretty sure that you will have to have your new licence posted to your home address. Your best bet then is to get a family member to post to you if you know you will be at a certain overseas location. In your case I might be tempted to renew online and get a family member to email you a copy of new licence. If unlucky enough to be stopped you can show your old licence and explain???

Thanks Riverbankannie. Really helpful. Just one further query. My Rapido is plated at max gross weight 3.5ton. Do I need C1? Or is it '3.5ton +' for C1.
My average travelling weight is approx 3.4ton.

You don't need C1. It is for OVER 3500kg.

Edit: just to add, if you decide to "lose " the C1 then the only way to get it back is to take the course and the test as youngsters have to do. About £1000.

Not quite correct, if you had a C1E before then you claim it with new medical.
Just keep a copy of the old licence to prove you had it, they forget sometime that you even had a group on a licence.

Not quite as bad as that.

If you decide 'right now' to not apply for a continuance of your present licence, you could apply in the future by jumping through the same hoops you would have to do right now.
A friend did it a couple of years ago. He passed the medical and now drives an Autotrail Savannah (MGW 4.2 tonnes) legally.

Thanks to all contributors to this thread & in particular Riverbankannie.
I can now confirm my pre booked ferry + dog friendly cabin early Jan & look fwd to my time in warmer climes, knowing license can be dealt with online. I will forgo my C1 but am reassured to know I can reclaim if necessary.

Do go and check with the online pages at the website for info that you will need. The most important is that you will need to be registered with the Goverment Gateway. Do this NOW as you will need a password or code which they will only send in the post to your home address.

Thanks R. Good advice. I already have my. Gov. Uk user ref & password but a good reminder to those who haven't. I have used it for several years for tax self assessment & have experienced it improving & becoming more user friendly year on year. :):D
