Gosh...what a palaver...I'm 70 next June....does one just have a medical and send the letter from the doc with the licence application or what Our MH has just been up-plated to 3700 kg???
You have a medical. You can ask your GP or go to a specialist medical place. There are quite a lot around as HGV and bus drivers etc need regular medicals. You will have to pay either way but our GP practice very expensive so we went elsewhere.
It will not be a letter from the dr, there is a special form that the doctor has to fill in. You send that with the application form to DVLA. If all is well health wise then you should get your new licence fairly quickly. The delay comes if it is decided that the application requires a review by DVLA medical board. I understand that this "medical board" is one person who turns up every 3 months!
You will be sent the forms automatically but you can get them from a main post office if you want them earlier.
Good thread but am still confused. I'm 70 April 2018 and drive a 3.5ton Rapido. Do I apply for just a normal licence & if I do will I then lose my C1? Also I am on Ferry to Spain Jan 18 for 5/6 months. How does one apply 6mnths early as mentioned earlier in this thread? I can find no info about that on .Gov UK.
Sorry @Steveboy it is 90 days but I think we got the paperwork together in the March ready to send off early April which was 90 days before.
If you wish you can renew online but you will not retain the category C1 on your licence, That's ok if your MH below the magic 3500 kg.
You will be able to renew online whilst you are away but I'm pretty sure that you will have to have your new licence posted to your home address. Your best bet then is to get a family member to post to you if you know you will be at a certain overseas location. In your case I might be tempted to renew online and get a family member to email you a copy of new licence. If unlucky enough to be stopped you can show your old licence and explain???
