Ok, so we love our Campervan, and use it as much as possible. But we also like to go and stay in hotels/B&B’s/Premier Inns etc etc, as like to holiday in a veriaty of places.
So, when we go away in the car, although it’s more nippy and easier to park, go exploring etc, we do miss the facility to be able to make a brew and use a toilet without getting out and going into services etc.
We currently have two cars that we use for our daily transport, and are seriously thinking of selling both cars and getting a day van to replace them.
just interested if anyone else has done this, or are we mad😉

There is a lot to be said for owning both, I knew a guy that towed quite a large day van behind his RV (y)

I'm struggling to afford mh AND a car and am wondering whether an alternative until/should finances improve, would be an estate car with the folding units that have been on this forum occasionally. A small kitchen, worktop, sink, toilet cupboard, etc... Some of them look pretty good.. Just would need curtains on side windows I guess.

There are plenty of campers that are small enough to be used as a car. Many of them are rising top vans, but they have come a long way and are not as cold and damp as they used to be.

We have a 7.4m motorhome with tow car and are just speccing up a VW day van for next year. A combination of the virus and generally disgusting facilities when they are open makes us want “our” facilities even on day trips, or even just shopping trips.

Can’t believe how little you get in comparison to a Motorhome though. Going to be a similar price without a bathroom/shower and half the space.

And it won’t be ready until Easter 😳

It is replacing our main family car.

We had a small camper (Bongo) and our PVC at the same time for 4 yrs along with a car. We liked the idea of using the Bongo for short trips etc but didn't use it for camping after the PVC arrived... It became more of a liability - needing repairs, MOT, tax and insurance etc and just wasn't being used enough to justify the expense.

Do any ‘day vans’ how a ‘proper’ loo, or are they all using PortaPotties.......?

I have recently changed my daily driver from a 4x4 pickup to a 6 seater crew cab van. Have a toilet for the back and will be sourcing a little 2 ring hob and a tiny sink. The little transit is as nippy as a car and fits in a standard parking bay

Peugeot Box PVC on a medium wheelbase (5.5m long) is my:
  • Motorhome
  • Day van
  • Daily driver
  • Motorcycle transporter
  • Race van
  • Passion wagon!
One van does it all

I only need 1 van - but 4 motorbikes is just not enough.... 🙂

Have you seen these?

When I had my abundance of VW t4s I used them all as my daily drivers and loved the fact I could make a brew etc anywhere anytime ...

The last one I owned before selling and going full-time in a motorhome was this one
An autosleeper trophy ...it had everything including a toilet and shower
2.4 diesel , 30mpg and less than 5 metres length ....I believe the newer one is a topaz

Yes, your first paragraph sums up our thinking as well.
i know it’s probably a bit extravagant, as you say, the cost is similar and you get a lot less in some respects, but as this virus stuff is going to be with us for a long long time, it’s just nice to have your own facilities.
We love our breaks away from the Campervan, in hotels/B&B’s etc, but having a day Will van give us the freedom to still explore whilst away, and not have to worry about finding places to stop for facilities.

Best combination that I have ever owned was a California pop top that fitted under all height barriers, it cruised at over 100 mph in Germany. It had 5 belted seats 4 large beds. Drove like a nice car and still returned 40mpg. It fitted in any hotel car park it had 8' standing height in the back. What is more it acted as a stay over while holidaying in the Costas or the Italian Riviera while being the perfect vehicle for the school run or the weekly shop. It also fitted in malty story car parks. And lots more..(y)(y)(y)

Some do, even within a pop top VW. Bodans “Clee” layout. Westfalia Kepler even has a shower if the budget is big enough 😳

"Malty Story" Is that a small brewery in a Multi story car park Buttons ?

Thankyou Steven, yes I have seen those, but can build my own much cheaper
Well of course... you don't need to make a profit on your own build

Me?
It would cost me a lot more paying for someone to reconstruct & put right my efforts
::bigsmile:

So, after a hectic couple of weeks scanning the ads, have finally put a deposit down on a day van this afternoon👍
Collect in a couple of weeks.
As with all things leisure related, we ended up spending much more than we originally set our budget at🙈
so, looking to sell the daily driver now.
It will not replace the bigger camper, far from it, but will be nice not to be constantly having to rethink where we are going to park, where height barriers have been put in place, and of course, the one big advantage, having our own facilities on board, being an absolute bonus in the current climate👍

Congrats. Looks great.

We are doing the same, but just ordering a new T6.1 base vehicle and getting it converted when it turns up early next year. Couldn't find the configuration we wanted anywhere.

All the best.

Thanks, we are absolutely delighted👍
We Looked through lots and lots of ads, but as you say, Couldn’t find what we wanted, so had decided to do the same and get one done to our spec, but then just stumbled, literally, accross this one, and although not exactly what we would of done ourselves, was 95% there, so done the deed👍
Carn’t wait now😎

We have a laika coachbuilt, I have a converted fiat doblo, can carry a chemical toilet but have yet to modify the seating/storage so it can be out of site but easy to access. has electric hook up leisure battery. fridge single burner, sink running water and the side bed can be madeinto a double.so far have only used it for camping when on my own and it is easily doable but it is a high top and I am 5' John has been with me for days out and the kitchen has been used, would be cramped for 2, but cosy ;)

Just signed the paperwork and apid the deposit for the new T6.1 Highline van. 20-24 weeks for delivery for a bl***y van! Ah well, it will be worth the wait. Oh, and then the few weeks to get it converted for our use......

Was interesting that the T&Cs said that if there were any increases in prices then I have the right to cancel, but if taxes/duty goes up, then I couldn't. Given that the Br***t trade deal isn't settled, I refused to agree to this. They accepted me modifying VWs documents to my own wording allowing me to cancel for any price increase.....

Maybe we need a new Motorhome + Camper club!

So, will be close to 6 months wait🙈
Hate waiting, it’s bad enough having to wait three weeks for ours to turn up. They are changing the front double seat for a single captains seat, before we collect it, so will have two single front seats, that both turn.
Nice feeling though, knowing the deal has been done👍

Yep! 6 months is about right.....

Same for us, twin single seats that turn.

Absolutely, can now spend 4 months designing and redesigning the inside. Oh, and trying to find a converter that will answer emails/phone calls  .....
