thanks where do you find out about these aires. The memory ceremony is one of my reasons to brave driving on the continet

Does it need to be a campsite or parking place? We stayed by a nearby lake, Zillebecke, no facilities but free of charge and an easy cycle path into Ypres. There is a camping car Aire with full facilities about 500 yards before you get to the lake that charges, but does have everything you need. We stayed by the lake for two nights, very peaceful.

My great grandfather was killed by a German mortar attack near the lake in WW1, so i do have a personal connection. If you go there, please throw a pebble in the lake for me ... Thanks

Camping Jeugdstation is about 5 minutes walk from the Menin Gate. During Winter October to March only hardstanding with electric and waste is available but the shower/toilet block is closed.

For the rest of the year the main campsite open providing further grass pitches plus the shower blocks.

You can book the pitches online.

Camping ypra, we stayed there 5 years ago

Jeugstadion is campsite and aire. Nice easy walk to the Gate and the town. Don't miss Flanders Fields Museum in the Grootemarkt too. And the Poppy Shop does some good pin badges. Look for the Menin Gate one. Proceeds go to the Fire Brigade trumpeters.

They have stopped overnighting down by the canal now, last time we used the new sports centre car park. We did get a light ticking off from a Gendarme in the morning telling us we could park for the day but not stop overnight but he knew we had been there all night, he asked us if we had seen anything as someone damaged the gates on the centre during the night.

You can park and wild camp here no problem

if you are going to Ypres, then visit this place, it's not far off. I've stayed here a few times as it's open for vistors to stay for a few nights.

There is also the shooting post and jail for the deserters, men shot at dawn etc, Popperinge is a lovely little town.

And in case you didn't know, just about every building around the Somme is no older than 1918, if you look at some of the buildings they have two dates on them as they were destroyed in WW1 and WW2 then re built both times in the original way.

Were about are you parking up as the museum appears to have no onsite parking?

Other than the Menin Gate ceremony another worthwhile place to visit in Ypres is the excellent In Flanders’s Fields museum at the Cloth Hall in Grote Markt. If you’re feeling particularly energetic the climb to the top of the belfry tower for a panoramic view of the salient will show how exposed the city and low lying allied positions were to the surrounding enemy held ridges.

If you are into war stuff this is well worth a visit, looks like a gigantic concrete block till you go round it, it's where Germany was hoping to launch the V2 from.
Doesn't very often get a mention on here, but as I said well worth a visit.

Another thumbs up for Jeugdstadion. Stayed there a couple of times and it's perfect for Ypres
Me to, there is a museum in the cloth hall that's worth a look, also there are a couple of places doing battlefield tours near the Menin gate if that's of interest.

Stayed in the carpark opposite the sports centre.no issues, but it was a few years ago. Just a short walk to the Menim gate,Police patrolled past a few times and didn't seem to bother ,we had parked up in the day with 2 other vans there but they went in the evening and we stayed .
The actual sports centre carpark was busy but not the one opposite.
