This time supposed to be from DVLA, saying something like " unpaid Road tax will be collected by Debt Collectors or pay now."
I looked closely at email address with DVLA in it then followed by the scammers, a bit of a shock , as I Tax my Motorhome Online I save DVLA email reply that says I have paid in my Motorhome section , I take a lot of stick before I get wound up ,but, if I could get my hands on that Low Life I would wring his or her neck

Son's girlfriend was scammed in a phone call at christmas from 'HMRC'.... and paid £1000 - bank said 'tough' - we aren't paying.

She took the matter to the Ombudsman - bank repaid £1000 + £300 compo this week.... (y)

If she autherised the payment I don't see why the bank should refund. I would have thought taking the bank to task on it and getting them to refund is fraud.

The banks facilitate the scams by allowing criminals to open accounts. Only now are they taking steps to prevent fraud - only because they are now being made to compensate - and about time !

Been compensating for years..Can understand it if some how a third party hacks your account but people who fall for e.mail scams should not get compensation.BUSBY.

The fraudsters were somehow able to clone HMRC bank details (as on HMRC website) and divert funds to another account. She checked bank account and it came up legit - it wasn't

Fair enough I suppose.

A lot more thieves and fraudsters are a lot cleverer than our top cop's and CEO's
That`s a Fact.

My youngest son, is one of those who are fully employed undoing the foul-ups created by company I-T "experts" who have left their employer vulnerable. Before that he was involved in unravelling the debacle that was the Airline Ticketing issues of a few years back, when the system was hacked and held to ransom. He cut his teeth, so to speak, working for the "Home Office" back in the 90`s and Naughties.

His Mantra? " if man can create it, another man can break it!" . Mainly just a question of computing power and knowledge of what underpins the software.

I have been receiving endless calls on the home phone with messages from the bank about £600 being paid to a foreign country to stop the payment press 1. From skye to stop my renewal. I don't have skye. BT problems on the line to name a few the answer machine picks up the messages. I wonder how often this happens when I am away. I have not responded, no money missing from my account, telephone line is obviously working, but skye isn't no surprise there. 😨

The scams are getting more sophisticated all the time. I don't blame anyone who gets taken in. Then there are those (especially some naive students) who act as "mules" and allow scammers to operate through a legitimate bank account, in return for a small payment. That allows scammers to get round the difficulty of opening new bank accounts for fraud purposes. There should be harsher penalties for these mules to deter them.

The other problem is a 19th century model of Policing that is ill designed to tackle 21st century digital fraud. They seem more interested in inveOur local force abolished its cheque and fraud team years ago.
