Absolute beginners.
In my dim and distant past I was partial to the odd tipple of laughing liquor, [ booze]. After a few years of having that "room spinning" experience I came to the conclusion, this really doesn't work for me, fine for other's, just not for me ,I'm not a prohibitionist.
Unfortunately recently I have succumbed to an inner ear condition that is characterised by that horrible experience of the spinning out of control world, but for free. This weekend it's been almost unbearable. The doctor over a telephone consultation has advised against, driving, working at height, working with machinery, in short my job profile, but of course also my pastime.
So it's now fingers crossed that this current bout will clear up in time with the aid of some prescribed medicine so as we can make our carefully planned maiden flight in a couple of weeks time, sods law and all that :frowny:
Mike.

lying down not moving worked for me .... was awful but better than the spinning !

Hi... I have in the past suffered the type of experience you describe and had visited the doctors..tablets prescribed and all that..mine may well have been brought on by a fall ..not sure..
In the end in desperation I went on line and read something about the ."epley manouver"..well covered and explained on you tube.. take a look..
I gave it a go.. I knew straight away it had worked..and you have nothing to loose by trying..
It may help if you have someone to assist.. ..
Good luck..
Andy..

I hope it clears up for you and stays away. dont get rid of any unused medication. I had this many years ago, so I really feel for you. It went, but then returned a few weeks later, so back on the meds. This happened for quite a long time each time less severe. To be honest I wasn’t sure whether it was the meds that were working or it just going by itself each time. If it was the meds it took 3 or 4 days for them to start working.
Hopefully medication much better now and you will only have this bout.

Thanks Andy, yes the doctor flagged up the video of newer versions of the exercise that involve laying from one side to the other, rather than head turning manoeuvre I had been doing. I'm hoping they help.

Well fingers crossed for you..I was prepared to persevere with it but was fortunate to get immediate relief..
Over the past few years I've had to go back to it once.. but of course it will only be effective if that is your issue..
At least the doctor did flag up the possible benefit to you..
Your background is paddling isn't it..
It's not unknown for that to have an adverse effect on the ears..
as I said ..hope you get relief..

.. Or Menieres Disease. Be warned that even once it's gone, it cankeep returning at any time. Sorry. :(

Buchastem helps stop the nauseus feeling but lying still is only option that gets me through... No looking up, bending forward or looking side to side. The manoeuvre works best if done by a physio rather than yourself.... but even so the vertigo will probably come back regularly. :(.

Be glad for small mercies, you have a partner should it occur when you are away miles from home in your mh.

Drink lots of water.

Hi Andy, yes good spot, but unfortunately I've been aware of it for at least 15 years which is pre my paddling days[ motorcycles prior to that ] and can normally manage it, but this last weekend nothing had any effect at all, but yes fingers crossed for the meds to have some effect. Thanks.
Mike.

It is awful - I really hope that it improves both fast and soon. Dawn had a bout of it at Chester a couple of years ago and could not move for a couple of days. Finger crossed for you

The Epley Manoever did wonders for me last January when I woke up with BPP Vertigo. A horrible feeling. Which I later realised was triggered by a visit to the dentist the previous day. I had to repeat that therapy with the help of Duxette a couple of more times over the following fortnight to clear the vertigo problem completely. Thankfully it hasn't returned.

I hope you are feeling better soon. I suffer from vertigo on and off, it first started when I had a virus years ago, went away but then comes back from time to time, triggered by lots of things such as illness, tiredness, being too hot, not eating, being stressed or upset. Recognising the triggers has helped!

Thank you to all those who have given advice, empathy, and offered solutions. I didn't realise it was such a common place ailment, I feel a complete fraud now :blusher:.
Mike
It might be fairly common but so unpleasant. My husband had an inner ear infection before Christmas and although pain has gone, he still cannot walk in a straight line and goes around apologetically saying “I’m not drunk’. He does have exercises from the hospital ENT physio but not helping. One problem maybe that the infection went untreated for a long time due to the covid circumstances and incorrect antibiotics. He has not dared to drive at all since as the symptoms worse when he turns his head, say at junctions.

Labrinthitis is horrible.

When I had it I tried booze to see if it would spin me the other way and counteract it but it didn't o_O

I do hope it soon clears up for you, awful. My sympathy.

You are NOT a fraud.

There are varying degrees of attacks and the bad ones are sheer Hell. The problem is that to other people you look 'normal'.... or drunk...... but you feel like you have a serious brain disorder.

Keep strong and remember that should it become a regular occurrence, like Zoobec says, you learn to identify the 'feeling' or warning signs a day before and can reduce the severity.

You are not a fraud! I find it helpful to tell people if I’m feeling dizzy, so they know why I‘m not myself. Thankfully I can avoid it happening by making sure I eliminate the most common triggers for me.

Just hope it's not as bad as my wife's.She started with it back in 2007,,She has seen probably eight different Specialists both ENT and Neurologists and been on more medication that you could imagine..Last treatment was bottox injections monthly,,thirty odd injections into the headto me and shoulders..It didn't work..She is now self injecting a slow pain killer each month which is helping. When it flares up she can be bed ridden for a week..Good luck with your treatment..BUSBY.

Normally, I know it's about to happen, but this last occurrence was the most severe, and disabling. I'm hoping it was a one of, and not the new norm.
Regards.

I can sympathise.
I don't have labrynthitus but have exactly the same symptoms with vestibular migraine. Had it for 5 years now.
Even had to get the fire service to get me off a mezzanine floor and into an ambulance in the garage when I had an attack.
I'm now taking 30mg Amitriptyline daily which is working and reducing symptoms greatly.

Google 'Epley manoeuvre' for labrynthitus.

Easy to do and works for many people. It won't cause any problems if it doesn't work.
It repositions the displaced crystals in the circular canals which cause the dizziness.

As Busby says, it doesn't always work for people. If it doesn't work ASK if you can have an appointment at Physio to have it done. When THEY do, it has helped me occasionally.

The tablets John mentioned are pretty helpful for me too.

On occasions I have been FLUNG across the room with it and once ended up in hospital with bloodied head when I landed on a door knob. Several times ended up in hospital because it lasted too long and needed a drip. So it needs monitoring. Hopefully, yours will not get to the serious stage.

As a matter of interest, one of the hospital doctors told me that in 'olden days' it was often thought that houses were haunted and it was a ghost pushing people over or out of bed. I can understand that.

Today I'm a lot less wobbly. I presume this the effects of the new exercises, and the sickness tablets. Just having a recuperating day today, before the grindstone beckons my presence again tomorrow  . Luckily I have a short week this week:happy:. Many thanks for all the helpful and supporting comments.

I went through this years ago, the first sign was when I started bouncing off the edges of desks at work, I didn't have the padding I have now. ;)
Not pleasant at all, I was given anti-sickness tablets.
It has never returned, I have a different way to be unbalanced now that won't go away.
