Alloy wheels

You need to get the correct profile new tyres so that the rolling radius is the same

And the correct stud PCD , there are 2 different PCDs and the correct ET ( offset)for the vehicle
Other than that ok..but will add weight to kerbweight

Hi. There are lots of threads on this subject with conflicting advice. Strictly speaking it's difficult to get a right combo that doesn't effect the Speedo to some extent. However I wouldn't worry too much about it as no one else does.

The 16" FIAT alloys look great and change the look of the van. Just make sure you get the light chassis ones . They are the better looking ones anyway.

This is a handy little calculator. Tells you the error in your Speedo reading

With the swapping wheels and tyres you might be able to get the speedo near accurate, which is more than Fiat managed to do.

That's actually quite true.

You will probably need 118PCD. I have been looking for a set of used 16" alloys for mine for ages, but there doesnt seem to be anything about unless you go aftermarket.

I'd never have alloys again, quite apart from having to pump them up every week when they get a few years old, they are weaker, heavier, more expensive, get stolen and look terrible after 2 years when the tin worm runs under the laquer.

This is a good silent type compressor you might be interested in, it makes a quick and easy job of van tyres.

I got my 16" maxi chassis wheels here, they also do smaller pcd chassis versions and their service was excellent:

My new 2019 speedo is so dark and deep down I struggle to even see it.
I still depend on the sat nav giving me my speed --- and it always accurate.

I changed to white dials, much easier to see in the daylight

I fitted a mirror simply laid on the steering wheel and it is the difference between night and day --- but I still prefer the sat nav

The un-sprung weight would actually be lighter.
Thats the whole point of alloys, its not just to make the vehicle look pretty.

Alloy being lighter than steel means that the suspension has less work to do in arresting the movement of the un-sprung weight of alloys.
Even given the extra 1" of the wheel, the smaller sidewall of the tyre still means that its lighter.

No they are usually heavier. Aluminium racing wheels are lightweight, that's the concept but they make them much stronger for road use. The road ones are all about looks.

Are alloy wheels actually lighter than steel wheels?

My Fiat spare alloy weighs a ton (ish)
Yes they are lighter, the only real issue is that there needs to be more alloy, put simply the alloy wheels are thicker.
Wheels aren't usually that heavy, but tyres....Thats a whole different ball game.

True, false, false, true, true and true

If you voted with your head you wouldn't have them. However if you tend to vote with your heart you would. Every time.

Had alloys on my first van, last two vans not bothered with them the steels look fine to me. Weight saving is only a few kg not enough to worry about.

Why not cantact Lockwood and see if they would look at a set for LHD
Not bothered now I fitted a GPS speedo.
They say they don't do LHD it probably means they don't do a kph only speedo in white I expect the RHD one would be fine.
I refitted the Kph speedo back in mine after import as it is easier to read, wouldn't want an Mph one.

According to Hymer the 16" alloys on mine are each 3kg lighter than the equivalent 16" steel wheels.

I weighed an alloy wheel off my van and compared it to the steel spare, there was only 2 lbs difference, but I can't remember which one was the heaviest !

I went for these after much research, i like the look and both tyres and wheels are rated 4750kg

Not a fan of alloys but if you must have them avoid the dimond cut ones, nothing but trouble. Once the lacquer gets a stone chip they go downhill fast particularly if you live live in an area where the salt & grit the roads.

I have to admit our Speedo is pretty spot on. The car is miles out.
A rare event in a Ducato, had 3 all been at least 10% high.
