After seeing a post on here where someone was selling a steel wheel with the bolts it got me thinking do steel wheels and alloy wheels use the same bolts? As if not i need to get some bolts to fit the steel spare?

Sorry if a stupid question, i just assumed the bolts already on the vehicle holding the alloy wheels on would do the same in the event of a mishap and the steel wheel needed to be used.

Thanks in advance.

If the steel came as a spare I would say it should have the correct bolts with it, my guess would be different bolts though.

Never came with a spare, i purchased this myself then added the tyre and high pressure valve to ensure i am covered if i get a puncture etc. Next question if i cannot use the same bolts how do you know which ones to purchase?

I assumed they would be the same and was wrong. Luckily my mechanic pointed it out before I had to find out in anger. The steel wheel ones are a different length so you will need bolts to go with it. My spare wheel was 2nd hand on ebay so definitely no bolts supplied with it.

I would think if its a Fiat wheel Fiat will sell bolts for it.

Where did you get your bolts? as now need to source a set.

Steel wheels and Alloys use different bolts.
Length will be different and sometimes the chamfer is.

Ebay is the source of all things wheel bolt related ?

If it's a Fiat copy the standard studs for steels may be correct still, you need to check the face that the stud sits on, is it flat or angle and then compare.

Sorry cant help with that, I just got my mechanic to supply suitable ones when he pointed it out when he fitted the tyre to the steel wheel. Mine is Mercedes not Fiat BTW.

The alloy wheels I bought recently for our van were designed to use the original vehicle wheel bolts although I got them with spanky bling chrome bolts, so I think it really depends on the alloy wheel manufacturer.

Bolts usually come with either a 60 degree taper or a dome. I don't know what is the fitment for a Mercedes but sometimes the length might be different.

I would talk to the wheel supplier. The maker will be marked on the wheel somewhere, usually on the inside edge of the spokes.

This is the original alloy wheel

both alloys and steels on the fiat ducato have a domed shoulder. the bolts for the steels are about 8mm shorter.

Its not alloy as i already have 6 alloys, the spare is a steel though. Unfortunately i have no idea what i am looking at so i think i will call the company i got the wheel from on Monday and see what they say. I will go out in a bit and see if the wheel will take the original bolts.
My post has been amended, just as you posted, ie, also lists for steel wheels. (y)

the cheapest source of standard steel wheel bolts is a commercial vehicle scrap yard. usually £1 each

My Hymer manual states they are different (Fiat) and my dealer had to supply a set for the steel spare, this was discussed on another group and it was suggested that alloy studs are longer therefore could project further through the hub and cause damage.

A French tyre fitted a steel spare on our fiat based van after a puncture on one of the alloys. He used the same bolts but was carefully checking the clearance by rotating the wheel while they were tightened.
Cheers

On a Fiat the shoulder angle is the same for alloy & steel. Bolts for alloys are 2mm longer so fine for a steel spare.

Its not a genuine fiat wheel but it does fit.
Have you checked the load rating, most aftermarket wheels have a lower load rating than genuine Fiat ones so not suitable for a Motorhome.

Yes i checked the load rating when i brought it and i think it was 1250kg which i have 6 wheels and the max weight is 5t so under per axle with the spare.
I have taken so pics of one of the bolts from the alloy that i have just taken off.

So my existing bolts should be ok?

We didn't get extra bolts for ours, so I think they will be the same, but I did get one of these, and having trucks with alloy wheels and knowing how they stick I would say it's a puller to get the wheels off. :Eeek: Bob.

Lenny HB ? Or maybe a tool to line the bolts up putting the wheel back On.?

Lenny HB ?

Do people not put a smear of copper grease on the mating surfaces of alloys and steels now a days ?
