We spent the night at the Baie de Somme services some 6 or 7 years ago. We were parked up with several other motorhomes and caravans. We awoke in the morning to find that attempts to break into every vehicle had been made. Our cab door locks were damaged.
Since then we have avoided the place like the plague. I would not recommend anyone to stop there.

I am Assuming this is the one near the "windmill"? On the A16?.

If so there have been reports over many years as to the increasing number of theft/attempts.

WE only used it once (2003) when we where in a large group. Mostly we time(d) it to use the smaller Aire at Marquise.

This is only 16 Miles from Calais, but off the A road in the village. It`s especially good coming back as 16 Miles is just far enough out to avoid the "Hassle" which is (was 2009) Calais.

We only went to the beach one once, about 5 years ago - drove in looked around us and drove out again. Looked like a 'Travellers' site - half nekkid kids running round, dogs that all looked like they needed a feed, people sat on moho steps wearing grubby white vests avin a fag, beer bottle in hand ......

Haven't revisited since !
So another enjoyable Fun rally then!

We have stopped at Bai De Somme a couple of times and the first time we made the mistake of stopping just by the water point, at about 1am I was wide awake and heard a car glide up without its engine running and no lights on, I looked out the back window just as some scroat was approaching our van.
Luckily he spotted me and dived back into the BMW and they drove off quick.

Since then we have parked in the caravan bay just a bit further down, this has the advantage of being a dead end so I doubt they would like going down there.

Hi All

Has anyone used this aire this year with all the issues happening around Calais / the rest of France? We're heading to Normandy regain in late May and our euro tunnel will get in around 12pm local time so want somewhere to stop for a few hours kip before heading off. Was also considering an aire around boulogne if anyone has any recommendations

We used this aire in Jan with no issues, but you can as you say use the Boulogne one (and you'll miss the collection guy, so it will be free!!)

There is an aire at the top of the hill overlooking the harbour & Nausicca in Boulogne - follow the nausicca signs, the aire is a few hundred metres up the hill towards Calais. There is also unofficial parking by the casino near the old ferry terminal.

If you are going to land at midnight , I wouldn't think you want to go any farther than cite Europe, just round the corner , and even though it may be in the middle of the troubles, has anyone seen any reports of trouble to mhs, always loads there every night, and regular police patrols, we would use gravelines as that is what we always do but no qualms about cite Europe.

I use the Baie de Somme services to stay overnight four times a year. Never had a problem since it opened but I do park near the windmill as the designated parking area is a bit remote. I have flashing alarm lights as installed by Vanbitz plus four other independent flashind LEDs , 2 on each side panel which probably (hopefully) puts off any potential wrong doers.

Such a pity it isn't patrolled as it's an ideal stop, with the shop and walks around the back, could easily charge for it.

Quite common for police to be there in numbers stopping people staying....it is that bad. Not a if the is not plenty of night stops about. I agree though it's a shame as it is convenient...

This blog is enough to put you off aires for life. We use them a lot, and rarely do we get a bad one.
Its all about some of the people that stay there.

Baie di Somme is an autoroute aire but it is very handy as it's about an hour from Calais. We have used it many times with the caravan & the MH but not recently. Please don't let this thread put you off using village/town aires, they are a great resource provided by the French making the country extremely MH friendly.

Aire are brilliant, a facility offered in France, Germany etc but not in the UK.
You are more likely to have trouble parking up in the UK than on the continent.
But, like anywhere, you need to be vigilant. Take responsibility for your own safety and keep possessions - handbags, mobile 'phones, laptops and satnavs out of reach (and view).
Motorway aires are notorious for robberies and breakins (and gassing:whistle:) so best avoided.

It wont put us off, far from it. I was saying that we rarely have problems. I never use motorway aires for obvious reasons.

Unfortunately the same happened to our motorhome and my mother’s behind us last night! However, the people parked behind theirs had dogs and they never tampered with theirs. Makes me think they had a sweep around first before darkness

Sorry to hear that, this is why we never use motorhome aires, too easy for people to come and go without being noticed and 'scout' out the victims for their evening soiree!
