Asked this before and a couple were suggested.. Turned out neither was actually an aires but merely an ordinary pay per night camp site..
Just need somewhere to plot up.. Nowt really needed at all in the way of facilities ( though toilet might be handy but certainly not an essential )

You pass a waggon park immediately as you get off the ferry, its big enough to have a quiet spot.

Gravelines Aire

Gravelines Aire

Basic Aire, no facilities, but has a vet, some good restaurants and a supermarket all within walking distance. It's a great spot to wait for the ferries.

Haven't used it personally but came recommended.

Have always used the Auchan car park at Grand Synthe; ideal if you are a late evening/ early morning arrival.

Auchan opens at 0800, baguettes and croissants freshly baked and if you really do need the loo, they are there too. Usually a couple of vans parked up, CCTV and never bothered by security patrols. Diesel available at the Auchan service station on the way out and minutes from the motorway.

The lorry park or the Ferry terminal car park is an option but both can be noisy.

Gravelines aire - free or not???

http://paulandlynne2011.blogspot.com/2011/02/day-1-weds-09.html

Hi, these people stayed at Gravelines in Feb 2011, and they said it was free to park.
I have also been told this as I will stop there when I go away.

Where you did you see the charge for parking?

When we arrive late in Dunkerque and stay overnight we always stay in the carpark near the ticket office. It is very secure, they dont mind at all and if you get at the back it is also quiet. There are always loads of motorhomes overnighting there.

There is a good dog walk along the side of the water to exercise your dogs and as far as facilities are concerned they have toilets and separate showers. Mens showers, not womens; but that made no difference I asked Michael to stand outside the door whilst I had a wonderful hot shower!!

You can try it for free and see what you think!!

As you leave the ferry and head towards the motorway, take the D601 towards Dunkerque/ Grand Synthe (fifth exit off roundabout - Auchan is about 5kms on the right

Or continue to the motorway, take the motorway direction Dunquerque/Lille and leave at first next exit for Grand Synthe - Centre Commerciale.

Hi John
When we went to the port on the way home we stayed along the quay, entrance to the canal, other side of quay was a massive gun enplacement, well we stayed there for the night, co ords are
N 51.02'56.82'' E 2.22' 05.02''
watched the boats going up and down the river.:thumb:

We stayed at one here:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&s...46703,2.381984&spn=0.003737,0.013733&t=h&z=17

It is actually just over the bridge on Rue Militaire rather than Rue Marcel Sailly (Now has a height barrier).

Don't know what it is called but it was fine for a stop over. There are toilets on the beach front along with restaurants and a bakery if you fancy fresh bread in the morning. The municipal swimming pool is also just up the road.

Didn't have to pay anything to stay there either.

Gravelines... I did not go there but DesndonuT did.. perhaps there is a free bit and a pay bit ?
mind you, Des is normally extremely good at finding free ones

Update.. just had a look for my self and agree .. Looks like a great place to plot up and have just entered the co-ordinates into the gps so we can go straight there..

As Gravelines is so close, if it is full or there is an issue we can make a dive to the Auchan car park Patr recomended..

Jim, I have found another site that IS a camp site very close to where the Gravelines aire is..
I think we can presume that Des did indeed make an error !!!

thanks, then I shall amend my map to reflect this updated information

If you use please let me know, and what cost (if any ) I can then update the entry .. :Rofl1::Rofl1:

Will do Jim, but suspect I will not be using a 25 quid site agin a free one !!

This aire is now closed to campers, height barrier is down all the time.
you can park across the bridge, and there are lots of campers park there, but there are some Itinerant type people who live there and bit run down, although some campers parked on the car park opposite the gun museum round the corner.

Thats the one, across the bridge.

There were some traveller type over in one corner when we were there. They kept themselves to themselves and didn't appear to want to cause any problems.

I wouldn't have any second thoughts about stopping there again if it were for a short stop over. We got there about midnight and left at mid day for the ferry.

Grav 1 (the one Jim quoted) is shown as 'closed' in the new Aires book.

We have defo stayed at the other one at Gravelines more than once (the one billed by Steve as Gravelines 2) It's defo free. It's on the road along the river directly behind the (hang on let me ask Pete!) Peugeot dealers on the 'main' road so you have to go past then turn left or right dependig which way you approach it !! If the aire is actually full; the river side of the rd the pavement is half a mile wide so just park on that except some of the boat owners get ridiculously stroppy, like it's their own personal bit of pavement LOL Oh, and it defo has no service point whatsoever - no water, nowhere to empty loo cassette, defo no toilet block.

Jenny, you guys got co-ordinates for that one ?

Hi John

Yes they are N50o 59.310 E002o 07.363

Regards

pete

The very Aire in that picture of it - the pavement on the river side gets wider as you go along the road with river on your right. When you get to where the road turns left, the corner bit is enormous and parking on it doesn't interfere with the boat owners!

Cheers Pete and Jen :thumb:
