I'm posting this on behalf of Halfpint

Dose anyone know how you stand legally regarding towing with an A frame and if involved in an accident? I have asked for clarriication from my insurance company but to no avail. Any advice would be grateful just to put my mind at rest thanks.

please reply to Halfpint

When I towed a car on a A Frame the A Frame was classed as a trailer and any damage to the car was covered by the cars insurance.

Hence the reason to make sure the Motorhome insurance company knows your towing with a A frame and the cars insurance is aware a A Frame is fitted as a modification and they are happy with it.

I no longer have a Motorhome or tow now but both insurance companies I used was happy with the above.

Can you clarify that. You say car was covered by the cars insurance but then say it was classed as a trailer and to make the motorhome insurance company know.

Surley if the car (toad) is classed as a trailer then it has to be covered by the tow vehicles insurance, so the motorhome not the car. Or is that not correct?

My understanding is that any damage involving a toad WHILST being towed is covered by the towing vehicle insurance, PROVIDING that insurance covers towing a trailer

The motorhomes insurance classes anything towed as a trailer and it does not cover the car for any damage, this is covered by the cars own insurance.

we make sure we insure both the motorhome and the car through the same broker, and they cover both parts with fully comprehensive (towing or no towing). they can sort out who is responsible for paying what in house should the worst happen.

I had both van and road insured with NFU.
They were told the car would be towed and they covered the car as a trailer for own damage....up to £1000.
If the car was attached it was covered by the van insurance ONLY IF ATTACHED for 3rd party damage.
its own insurance took effect if, for example, if became detached and hit something/someone

I was also told that the car being told would only be covered by 3rd party insurance. I tow a classic car worth in excess of £10,000; but it is not like towing a new Igo Aygo or Fiat 500. I accept the risk but would be happy to know that I could pay extra and cover the value of the car.

My understanding is the 3rd party risks are covered by the towing vehicle’s insurance. I have some doubt that there is comprehensive cover on the toad but I am prepared to take that risk. Car and motorhome are on a joint policy with NFU so they might pay out. Hope I never have to find out.
