In case you didn't realise. The www runs on top of the internet. The internet itself is just the network.
On top of the internet multiple services such as mail and the www are run.
The protocols and design of the www was created by Tim Berners Lee an Englishman working at CERN. He gave us it all for free. He could have been a very rich man.
It didn't become useful until the first web browser called Mosaic was released as public domain in 1993.
Some of you who have been around the internet will remember Netscape. Netscape was built by the same people who wrote Mosaic. Neither are still around but the Firefox browser is it's direct descendant...
