Thank you Tim Berners-Lee.

In case you didn't realise. The www runs on top of the internet. The internet itself is just the network.
On top of the internet multiple services such as mail and the www are run.

The protocols and design of the www was created by Tim Berners Lee an Englishman working at CERN. He gave us it all for free. He could have been a very rich man.

It didn't become useful until the first web browser called Mosaic was released as public domain in 1993.

Some of you who have been around the internet will remember Netscape. Netscape was built by the same people who wrote Mosaic. Neither are still around but the Firefox browser is it's direct descendant...

22 years ago when we set up our business I said I’d never use the internet, cos it was just for con men and porn.

Now our business is 100% online and I couldn’t imagine life without the web.

How times have changed.

That's great news Rob, but I'm still waiting for my delivery of Nigerian cheque books and mucky dvd's that I ordered online from you. :D2

No internet here, up in the peaceful wilds of Central Portugal, would mean I would have no access to...

Motorhome Fun.
Newspapers to read daily.
Ebooks.
Footy forums.
Films to watch.
Podcasts to listen to.
Radio.
MOTD to watch.
YouTube videos.
Skype video calls to my Princess.
Viber texting with Funster friends.
Emails to run my Empire.
My banks accounts.
Revolut Card and account.
Translations.
Learning Portuguese lessons.
Bubble Shooter, Solitaire, Backgammon.
Twitter (to slag off folk like Piers Morgan).
Recipes (made my first battered pork balls this week, yummy).
Live football matches from all over the world.
Garden advice and tips.
Photos and photography...

...and so much, much more (including foreign exercise videos).

"Viber texting with...friends". Hmm, does it need batteries or is it rechargeable? :)

From memory, I think I got my first PC (a Dell) in 1998 or 1999 but didn't connect to the internet until around 2000.

Those were the days if you had one of the cheap dial account constantly dialing out with the modem only to get the engaged signal, half an hour later you got a connection only for it to drop out after 10 min. Unimaginable how its changed our lives now.

used my first computer offshore in around 1985 . First home computer was a Dragon in 1996 , used it for our hairdressing business doing staff wages, book keeping and stock control.. Had my first proper PC, a Compaq in 1996 and was on the web same year using dial up, but only after 6pm due to cost .. what a palaver that was .. AOL, MSN, and ICQ chat were the forerunners of the social networks we have today ..

I can recall the response I got from people when they found I had a computer at home. "What on earth for? Aren't they just for offices?"

I remember in the mid 80's being impressed with myself as I had managed to download a printer driver ALL THE WAY from America! I remember being so chuffed about that and how non-plussed Siân was about it. :D

The first mobile phone call was made 40 years today, on April 3, 1973, by Motorola employee Martin Cooper. Using a prototype of what would become the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x, the world's first commercial cell phone, Cooper on , in New York City and placed a call to the headquarters of Bell Labs in New Jersey.

I said I'd never have one , as I didn't want to be contacted when out in the camper.
Now got 2 with us nearly all the time ,deffo1 with me.

It was around 1985 we got our first computer and was running Computers In Nursing, a software package designed by John Rowley based in Hull. DOS based, we could do accounts, staff and client records all in one place. Most of the staff never did get used to it but I loved churning out reams of printouts. It took time before he got a Windows version up and running, 286 in around 88/89 I think.

Didn't realise the Internet was so new when I first used it 93/94. But between the slow dial up connection and the limited sources ( compared to today) hardly surprising it didn't really really speed up research.
Thanks for the info @Gromett

The internet itself is not new. That was started in the 1960's. Only the www is 25... :D

The reassuring dings and plonks as the connection was made. I'd used micronet in the USA and think I used Compuserve changing to Force 9 when they started up. First Motor home group I joined was via aol. Registered a couple of domains and set up online businesses late 90's. Still have my 1981 Commodore Pet and disk drive in the garage.

No, the first public mobile phone service in the UK opened on the 28th October 1959. This covered South Lancashire and was operated by the (then) GPO (General Post Office) under licence issued by the Post Master General. It could only be installed in vehicles and to make a call to a landline or another mobile carphone (as they were called) the connection had to be made by calling over the air to a switchboard operator in the Cathedral Telephone Exchange which was based in "Dial House" in Salford. A bit obscure I know, but I am only aware of this because I was the Exchange Superintendent in charge of this exchange in the late 1960's. The GPO telephone service went on to become a Public Corporation, before being privatised and becoming what we now know as BT.

Thank you Tim Berners-Lee.

25 years to take almost sane people and turn them in gibbering idiots forever glued to little screens.

Yes, there are benefits.

But huge job losses.
A whole new field of crime/bullying/sexual crime/terrorism.
Isolating people. The number of internet grocery deliveries here is amazing.
Huge potential for government/corporate control over us.
Enormous pressure now on youngsters to conform to an advertising generated target.
