Just had the RAC out to bring my flat van battery back to life. They ran a test which indicates the battery needs replacing when it is less than 2 years old! The van was new back in May 2014 but the warranty only covers batteries for 12 months.

The van is on a Boxer chassis and the existing battery is 95Ah, 680 CCA. The RAC want £137 to supply and fit. Is this a good price or are there other suppliers that anyone would recommend?

Check guarantee, I thought most battery's had a 3 year guarantee. I paid £90 last month supplied & fitted by breakdown guy. Independent, not one of the big players

@cbrown1360 The 1 year battery warranty is not unusual. Although the vehicle was new (first registered) May 2014 the base vehicle, and hence the battery, could be a couple of years older. You have to consider how long the the manufacture have it stored before supplying to the converter and how long they had it before conversion.

This vin converter will give you an idea of the date of construction of the base vehicle. http://www.vindecoderz.com/EN/Peugeot

Has the battery ever gone completely flat before today.

That is circa DOUBLE the price for a battery of reasonable quality with 2-3 year warranty and about average for a battery supplied by AA RAC
£100 you want at least 3 prob 4 year warranty
And remember most batteries DONT Fail But very many are Murdered

Unfortunately this is the third time the battery has gone flat. As well as a new battery maybe I need to to invest in some form of automatic trickle charger if such a thing exists. I suggested to RAC man that I start engine and run up for ca 30 mins every couple of weeks to charge battery but he suggested that is not a good idea due to potential EGR(?) and soot issues on modern diesel engines. Any thoughts / comments welcome. Thx.

TMS or any of the larger motor factors will sell you a battery for half of this price & will give you a three year warranty with the battery. Alternatively, phone your local Kwik Fit (other fast fit centres are available)& ask for a quote?

The engine killing EGRV is normally closed at idle, as it is whenever power is demanded.

It seems to me that you need a solar panel and a battery master from vanbitz.

Spot On Information, you would never need to worry about it again !

If you're not covering much mileage, and as a result the battery isn't getting charged very often, this lack of use is probably causing the issue, we charge ours weekly when the MH is not in use.

Vin converter suggests van manufactured in 2001 and has done 234,000km. Definitely not mine - they must be recycling VIN numbers.......

Is that the correct ampage? Just seems low when my 1.2 car is 90 odds but as said. Look at battery guarantee. Some are only two years though. Dont know if you will get away with this but. Some battery's have an installation date if the installer could be arsed putting it on. If older than your van you could argue you bought a new van and would have expected the battery to be new also.

I would recommend for any X250 or X290 battery replacement that you upgrade to a 110ah Varta for about £110 delivered

I am not sure but I think there was a recall on some x250's for new batteries to be fitted -Think I read from 650 cold cranking to 900 CC which I thought on reading was a massive jump

You must be using the vin converter wrongly...nothing on the vin plate will indicate mileage....even estimated or assumed.
What that is showing is an average expected annual mileage multiplied by the age.

If you buy your own battery it wont have the extremely expensive RAC branded label on it.
Chances are it will be a low to mid quality battery tarted up by the RAC to look like its their own brand.

There was indeed a recall on the battery as a lot of vans were fitted with the wrong one ( smaller capacity if memory serves me )

@ cbrown1360
Is your van a BAILEY if it is you might be in luck over a period of time Bailey specified 900ah but fitted 650ah it did not come up as a recall but I saw it and my mate next door got his changed at the Peugeot dealer he has a 2015 Bailey .
Hope this might help you
