hi, just purchased a Hymer B544 and not sure how to get the heating to work. There is a gauge on the wall ,it has shower pictures on it both up and down so is this just for the water? Or both,or can you have heating without water, as we have the tank empty due to the cold.thanks in advance.

You should have a heater symbol on the up position, in the up position it heats water and runs blow air heating

Not sure about running it without water, I seem to think I’ve somewhere some you can and some you can’t.

We have the same system in our 1999 Le Voyageur. I am too much of a coward to risk running it without water, just in case.

Thank you, that’s exactly what we have , thanks for that, I will put water in just to try but then empty it again unless somebody tells me different, surely you must be able to have heating without water?

So the hot air comes out via the vents at a constant rate and heat , you can’t alter it.

You can only change the temperature on the room stat.

As there appears to be no setting for heat without water I would assume that it is not possible The later one I have does have such a setting and it can be done.

I find that the hot air system works well BUT I have been warned that it can eat gas at a prodigious rate so we use a small fan heater if on site and we pay for leccy anyway. Only 6 amp here so have to stick to just 1kw not as good but cheaper.

@bubble - suggest that you run your system without any water for a few days and then we'll know what to do or possibly what not to do.

An interesting thread, I have a 2006 Hymer with different controls to those in your photograph and the literature assures me that I can have heat without heating the water but I have never succeeded yet as the water also heats at the same time
What is being heated to give you the heat if not the water, is there simply a heating element within the system, to maintain the heat the fan has to be running which will deplete the hab battery.

If there's water in the boiler it will heat it to some extent, it can (at least on mine) work the heating even if the water is drained.

The heater works with a water jacket round the burner. It will always heat the water if there is any there. The settings for the hot water with the heating means that the water temp will be 60 degrees so you cannot have lower temp water with the heating on. The thermostat is the control for the MH temp.

@bubble, your Hymer will have either of these two boilers Trumatic C 3402/C 6002 (see yellow label on outer casing), and with the aid of the instruction in the link, and @Manic's photo above, you'll be able to get the best out of you extremely efficient heating system.

We've had our for 14 x years now, and yes, the boiler is designed to run without water in it's tank. I'd advise following the instructions for descaling the stainless steel hot water tank, as this can help to maintain heating efficiency, thereby using less gas. I previously used cheap catering white vinegar from a cash and carry, but now use citric acid in dilution form. Same results with no harm to the boiler, but less of an aftertaste. Remove any filters before descaling.

Unless in the height of a hot summer, use the 60 degree setting for showering, as the 40 degrees setting is only lukewarm and fine for dish washing.

The system is safe and flued to the outside, and can be left on through the night, an absolute godsend in the current UK temperatures. Also, it is TUV approved for such use, which is an assurance of it's safety. (y)

HTH,

Jock. :)

Thank you all so much, we have had a Hymer before but don’t remember how this heater, water worked. We will try it out today, where did you buy your citric acid to clean boiler please. We need to spend the next few days week !!! Cleaning it. But we think it was a good purchase. It drove home from Wigan to Lowestoft beautifully , so we hope we have bought well within our budget. No doubt we will have more questions, and hope you all will be just as patient with us and our lack of knowledge, but that’s why we love this site and joined because you welcome and advise us without judging us. Thanks again.

Hi @bubble. :)
I get 1Kg bags of food grade citric acid from this supplier on Ebay. I pay just over a fiver for it.

It is great for descaling the sprinklers on the tap spouts, as well as kettles, irons, and of course, the boiler. (y)

I don't want to set off any alarm bells or scaremonger, but if it's your first Hymer with a wooden ply underfloor, please check it's integrity, especially the area behind the rear wheels (up to the bumper), which is vulnerable and subject to water splash. I hope you don't have a problem, but many other Hymer owners have had.............................us included. :(

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Thank you so much , hubby just checked the floor and it’s great, all the covers of seats curtains mattress cover front bed curtain all off and getting a very needed wash ,but our surprise underneath the cushions is another complete set of original covers in brand new condition, great. The original owners must have had the covers made to protect the new cushions, how lucky are we.

Thanks Norman. :)

Any inline water filters, be they Carver, Reich, B&Q, etc, or specialist like Nature Pure, so that they are not contaminated/damaged. I sterilise all the water lines with the same solution, when descaling the boiler. :)

That's good news. I am really pleased for you. (y)
