We've been fulltiming in our 1991 Hymer 534 for about 1 year. I'm now looking to get a smaller van for myself as I feel that I need my own space.

I'm hoping it could also complement our 5.6 m Hymer in that a smaller van (5 m or less) can access some areas easier. Towns with narrower roads, attractions that are up steeper hills etc. We do already have e-bikes but hardly ever use them. We plan to be on the continent, traveling with the seasons.

Has anyone else done this (1 couple with 2 vehicles) and have any pointers?

Double the vehicles means double the maintenance costs, insurance , road tax, fuel, etc etc. We are in a similar situation, its not easy.

If you are " A couple" and no ne else involved . I'd actually question if you really should be a couple. :xrofl:

Sorry just my opinion. For us its just not quite so simple as my mums in the equation and she's old school.

What's nonsensical about it? Fella wants his own space, . A year in a 5'7mtr Hymer I'd want my own space too.

On a personal view, my wife and I live in a 3bed Bungalow, we have been together for nearly 46 years , we HAVE, our own space if we want to have some me time, we both respect that. My wife has her own studio in the garden, and I have the garage/mancave.

Why Sandra?
Full timing in a 5.6m van!!! My idea of hell?
I'd struggle to share my space, no matter how much I cared about someone.

If you can afford it Maya then go for it, for both of your sakes?

And why the negativity with the other post??? ?‍♀️

Don't make any decisions before next Friday. Depending on the outcome you'll know if your days of wandering Europe full time will be curtailed. :)

But I've seen couples where one drives the MH and the other a car which they use to explore locally. You could do this but have a larger MH which will give you more space. Separate bedrooms are even possible. :)

It is an odd scenario.
Two vans means double the costs of travelling and life on your own most of the time.
Would you travel in convoy then try and get two pitches next to each other ?
Seems bizarre to me, maybe fulltiming in a van isn`t for you ?
I don`t think I could do it with the Mrs but never tried it, I just imagine it could be very difficult.

I'm clearly obivious to the negativity? I just say things as I see them.

Why not one slightly larger
van to give you a separate space if possible or, one of you get out on the bike more often :xThumb:

I think so too and can see how you can perhaps feel like living in each others pockets but theres nothing stopping either party doing their own thing for a few hours then meeting back up later. We are all different but for me if I was in a relationship id either give it my all or say just friends and live in separate vans.

We have 5 months in a 6 meter van............... ? we find it brings us closer together. ?
The biggest problem with anything other than a motorhome, is long term insurance 365 days. ? Bob.

And which one gets kicked out first Bob or Izzy ?

unlucky Bob..??

Seems an expensive option and you've always got to find 2 parking spaces.
We have a 7 metre van with the option of 2 bedrooms (back and drop down front) so I can go and read, hubby can watch TV.
But of course you are still with each other 24/7, ( just not so intensely) so not sure that would help.

Have you considered buying a small car and either trailer? or A frame the latter not very practical in some European countries at least you would be saving on fuel and you would be able to get out on your own.

Having your own space is important. Me and SWMBO live in a largish house and we do have our own space. I am currently in my study on the top floor (not studying as I am on the forum) and SWMBO is two floors below me knitting and watching some rubbish on TV.
When we are away in a 7.6m mh we obviously are much more together and thats not a problem for the 6-12 weeks we are usually away at a time. Full timing would b a strain though.

Understand this completely - we downsized from 5 bedroomed house and garden to two bedroomed apartment no garden - survived 3 years and it was either upsize or divorce I recon as we were always in each others way.

Now happily back in 5 bedroomed house and 2.5acres of garden.

Motorhome is 9m and we can survive in that for 6 weeks maximum before one of us wants to murder then other!!!! :xgrin:

Am i really reading this nonsense

we have a coachbuilt and i have a converted doblo, both get well used, doblo is my daily driver. wouldn't take them both abroad, but then we do take a motorbike for the less accessible places.
We do like our own space, we have separate interests as well as joint.
No way could i share John's politics on TV and watching news several times a day, so much as we love to be together, i have my snug, in there now on the forum, he is watching sport on tv another thing i am not that keen on. doesn't mean divorce is imminent, oh that's right we aren't married ?. Just that we both like doing our own thing at times.
This has really strayed from the OP question. wouldn't travel in 2 vans but we don't full time.

We fulltimed and travelled for ten years with two kids.

We always travelled in two vehicles. An RV and either a Citroen Jumpy ( which died on us in Belgium)
or a Peugeot Expert. They both were window vans with six seats. You could sleep in them.

We also had two tents. A small one and an a four man one which got well used.

It allowed us some space and obviously got us out and about .

Sure it was more expensive but they were crappy vans that we weren't afraid to park anywhere.

How about a converted small panel van without windows, so you don't get hit with a second "pitch" charge, if you say it's just transport.. Something like a Doblo van to act as a bolt hole when needed but otherwise just your transport and extra storage space

Spotted in a car park here was a Kangoo. I had a peek inside. Apart from the two front seats it had a longitudinal bed, which looked fixed but may have converted to something else, and a tiny kitchen unit. The bed looked too narrow to be a double but the concept seemed ideal for one person wanting personal space. Ideal in combination with larger mh with a shower. Possibly could even be a toad.
