Bit of a daft question (most of mine are) but I’ll admit to struggling with my motorhoming. I work weekdays and have some other hobbies, but I do still have plenty available time for the motorhome, it’s just that it’s not getting used as much as it should. It’s also fair to admit that I’m fairly badly motivated, quite bad at planning, and I do suffer from mild depression, is there any hope for me ? I originally figured that the motorhome would be the answer to my troubles..... not if it sits on the driveway it isn’t !

Before I continue, I’ll say that I absolutely love the motorhome, it’s truly awesome, I would sell it if I didn’t like it.... I need a serious kick up the a*rse !!

I’m in the Caravan and Motorhome Club, and also have Britstops

I love nice quiet sites, ideally within reach of an old, historic or interesting town / village / city, in walking or cycling distance to a good pub or similar.

Went to the new forest last year, and could reach Lyndhurst by bike. Went to watch a band there, and had a fabulous time.

Can anyone help me with any ideas, sites that aren’t permanently full (read : Rowntree Park York) and night for the bill

Sorry for the essay, thanks for reading

Paul

Although not the answer for forward planning, keep checking the cmc sites in the few days before you go . You can pick up the cancellations that are freed up by late cancellation . We’ve done it successfully

If you want to go to the York site try phoning them to see if they have cancellations. We're in Castleton at the moment. It looked full on line but when we phoned they had room. There are other sites in York as well.

Rowntree Park York is a nightmare to get in especially at weekends to the point where a friend of mine was laughed at on the phone when trying to book for October!

The only way to book the site is to decide your dates and check a few times a day and grab the days as they come up. We have just done exactly that for 2 pitches for a weekend in October.

Hi, might help if you said what area you are in.
I have a couple of wilding spots I can get too at short notice without needing to book anything and not too far from home.
Great for those impetuous moments.
After that it'd be a case of just ringing around sites on a Friday to see where there is space.
BTW with CMC it's worth ringing, often I have found the website says full, but if you ring you find there's space.

This is exactly what our friends did, asked if there was a ‘waiting list’ only to be laughed at.

Apparently the club website is real time and cancellations come up more than you would think, I am always told by wardens this is the best way to grab cancellations.

There are other sites in York but none in such a convenient location (less than 5 minute walk to town)

Thanks for all your kind replies

P.S, I’m in Blackpool, Lancs

Worth looking at the camping and caravan club da (district association) meets and ths (temporary holiday sites).
They tend to be about as tender a night, in a variety of locations.
They also have an app called Out and about.
You can put in area, radius, dates and type of meet.
This is what is showing for this weekend, 50 mile radius from Blackpool.

Precisely why we have more or less given up on the UK, aside from the horrendous prices, pensioners book 12 months in advance on caravan club sites then decide if they turn up, with no penalties.
We like to leave planning to the last minute, as never really know what I am doing work wise, we prefer cls, but most if them are booked, and when you call don't answer or return calls.

We use York caravan site tranquil sites , a bus stop outside then drops you off outside site on the way back £4 return and only 10-15 mins.

End of the month is firework competition at Southport. As has been previously said, CAMC sites, and I have used this successfully, start looking closer to date for cancellations, usually 72 hrs as this is the latelest a booking can be cancelled without repercussions. ARarely failed me. Southport is a great town, walking distance from CAMC site. Morrison’s very close by, great walking for dogs on what seems like an endless beach. There’s also, by the fair, a car park that is used but for me they can be packed in like sardines and price hikes which make it not that much cheaper than out of season on the CAMC site and you have clean toilet blocks and electricity.

For us the only thing that raises motorhoming above being just another kind of holiday is going to France, Germany and Belgium. Motorhoming is far, far more catered for and affordable and the roads are less crowded. If Br***t stops or hinders travel to Europe then our motorhome will be sold without a doubt.

Re Europe, there are plans for us to do the Euro thing, just that I keep doing Europe by motorbike and leaving the motorhome on the drive, lol

My nephew's pub The King's Arms at Sandhutton near Thirsk is a Britstop, the food is great and he is a cyclist and can tell you some good rides out - Northallerton, Ripon, Thirsk etc. Always phone in advance because he only has one MH space.

You guys are just great, you’ve no idea how much help you can be to a fellow motorhomer, awesome stuff

If you have the BritStops book, there is very little planning you need to do. Just check out the area you want to visit / has the place you want to visit / National Trust / English Heritage etc and see if there is a BritStop close by. Thats all we do and we are away every third weekend ish. Would be a lot more, but Jane and I have to work some of those weekends. Best of both worlds and keep going to the New Forest, its a great place to visit and there is Setthorns, one of the "Camping in the Forest" sites, that is open all year and very rarely fully booked.

If Br***t stops or hinders travel to Europe then our motorhome will be sold without a doubt.
I think you right but what a terrible shame that would be to so many.
Let's hope it doesn't come to that

Hi Paul.

I read your post and just wanted to address what you say about depression. I’m sure I’m not the only other person on here who suffers. Your ‘black dog’ is probably unlike mine, so I won’t say I understand how you feel but I do think depression hates company - which is why it tries so hard to push us away from people...

One thing you could do is to post up here when you have weekends/time available and see if there’s anyone else going somewhere you fancy who you could aim to meet up with. As well as the prospect of meeting new people and making new friends, the sense of obligation might help to stop you procrastinating and get you out of the door. It sounds like you already know that when you do so, you will have a great time!

Wishing you many happy travels...

Paul J We live in the North West near Preston so for short trips we go to places like this
Garstang Marina
Tarn House Skipton
Woodclose Kirkby Longsdale
