Here am I on a site in Italy and it’s lovely apart from one issue - dog barking .Why does a Motorhomer buy a dog that simply yaps all the time or at least it does when its awake, why buy such a dog in the first place, why take it to somewhere like a camp site where you know its going to annoy others and finally why would the owner of said dog not reprimand it or at least try to stop it barking ?

(The guilty person by the way its a British Motorhomer with a dog that resembles a large rat )

Ah! That would be a sausage dog then, maybe. Tend to be a tad yappy.

Why do they do it? Because they’re stupid owners haven’t trained them properly. Perhaps you should ask them if you could have a little chat about it and they might do something to alleviate the situation.

Or, you could buy some earplugs.;)

My daughter is guilty of having a mini sausage who can bark for England. He only barks at other dogs coming close or cyclists going past and maybe the odd squirrel. He will be quiet when told.
However they are very careful in their choice of campsites as they know how much it irritates others. They pick remote sites and a pitch as far away from others as possible. They also try to be away from the site as much as possible. He does have many redeeming features though…..he is absolutely fantastic with children and he is the most affectionate little rat and sleeps for a full 12 hours with not a peep. ☺️
I don’t mind dogs on campsites but dogs that constantly bark are a pita.

All dogs bark, it's what they do, they can get protective of a pitch and bark if you pass, or they might let a passing dog know how big and tough they are, this is normal canine behaviour. Barking (and howling) dogs have been part of our lives and kept us awake for millennia, it's one of the reasons they became domesticated, sometimes there is just no escaping it.

On a campsite, if the odd bark or three really winds you up, then restrict yourself to wilderness camping and hope the Cuckoo, Owl or Barking Muntjac don't disturb you too much either.

That all said...Dog owners who have yappy dogs that bark all day should also restrict themselves to wilderness camping and never book onto campsites, because when they do they are being selfish and inconsiderate. No one loves dogs more than me, but IMO dogs that yap incessantly have no place on a campsite. I suppose the only positive thing about constant yappers on a campsite is at least you're giving your neighbours at home a bit of respite.

We look after dogs for short periods (holiday cover) for dogs in training to be medical detection dogs. When we started we we amazed how many didn't bark at all in sometimes 2 or 3 weeks. We had one that would bark at someone coming to the door. Another that would whine at squirrels but the majority are as quiet as a mouse. Clearly there is something in training that can control this.

By the way - excellent charity.

Our latest adventure's first night was spoilt by the chirping of a seasonal caravan alarm every 15 seconds all through the night. I offered reception a free tow to the middle of nowhere if it wasn't rectified by the 2nd night

I'm 100% convinced there was a cockateel in a motorhome a little way from us as well, that wasn't a disturbance at all, but when I walked past I could hear it chirp.

Why do so many campers have multiple yaphounds? I was recently parked next to a T5 with two adults and five of the blasted creatures. I suspect their van is more than a tad whiffy.

And before the attack, I am a dog lover, having owned them ally life until a few years ago.

We had a Border Collie that never barked, never heard a peep out of it.
When it was getting on in years we got a Sussex/Springer Spaniel cross, typically having the "worst" of the two breeds habits, it was stubborn (sussex) and bonkers (springer), within weeks it was encouraging the BC to bark all the time... they would play well together, but boy did the BC become noisy all of a sudden.

We’re on a site in Belgium. Yesterday we had lovely neighbours with a GSD and a Rottweiler. Obviously I didn’t get close but you’d not have known they were there other than an occasional woof.

Unfortunately they have been replaced by a yappy small hairy thing not on a rope who came on our pitch when I was hanging out my washing and was about to pee on it until I moved it with my foot. I shouted at it but it didn’t understand English. The German owner did and has reluctantly tied it up. People are annoying.

Our two are Jack Russell x Chihuahua. There first instinct is to bark at everything and everyone. I have taught them to stop when told, but nothing I do will stop them barking in the first place. There are plenty of dog free campsites, if the barking drives you mad, pick one of those.

I "Google" reversed your question:-

Why do people that don't like dogs and children insist on using sites that allow dogs and children then moan about dogs and children? The bigger question is "Why don't people that don't like dogs and children use sites which do not allow dogs and children?"
Isn't Google amazing?

Unfortunately I have a neighbour with a Lurcher that is vicious and goes for everybody even though on a lead. Worse still I cannot move in my back garden without the damned animal barking incessantly and it is often left there to its own devices. Even just sat sunning myself reading a book it will bark as it hears me turning the page!!!
Not the fault of the dog. I blame the owners.

Yapping dogs and whooshbangs pvc are the same but you don’t hear it when it’s your own dog or door…😆😎
Please don’t ban PVC’s from campsites, we love ours, it’s a thing of beauty and I don’t complain about dogs just some of their dumb owners. Most owners are very nice.

Sadly, there are very few "no dogs" sites. (Note "dogs", not "dogging")
As a dog owner there seem to be plenty

Perhaps if the dog haters used the non dog sites, instead of using "dog friendly" sites then dripping about dogs, no dog sites would be more popular

Could it be that from a free market perspective that the majority of people like dogs and don't moan about them?

When I opened my campsite I allowed dogs children and used to keep envelopes with twenty quid in the office

When someone came and moaned about someone else enjoying themselves, BBQ smell, children laughing, people having fun, the staff were instructed not to argue, reach under the counter and proffer a "leaving envelope" with the "There's you pitch fee, bye"

Could deal with anything other than miserable moaning people, and I was only 44 years old when we opened the site in 2005

Probably another good reason that NickWattGuardz, Simon Select AshWattGuardz and James from Andrew James Motorhomes put me out for early retirement lol

I love the sound of children playing, that was one of the saddest things during Covid when you’d go out for a walk and passed a playground and it was silent. Really gave me the creeps. Miserable moany children are usually the product of miserable , moany , lazy parents who can’t be arsed to play with them I find.

Agreed and sadly Covid just encouraged more use of phones, iPads and game stations which unfortunately has made it much worse. Technology is great if used properly. I often marshall at my local junior parkrun. Not only do upwards of 100 children, aged 4 and over, run 2 kilometres they nearly always stay and play on the brilliant wooden play park. I love to watch them out in the fresh air, socialising with other children and taking a few risks on the equipment. It’s a great sight. 🥰

There used to be an exceptionally fine line between kids 'taking a risk' and smashing a bone or several, when I was little in the 1950's cos playgrounds were frequently tarmacced or concreted - at least that's been stopped now.- still need supervising but at least they should be allowed to closely investigate. We were never allowed as keeping clothes clean was top of my mom's agenda, not my enjoyment!

Anyway - whether children or pets of any description there have always been people who should never be permitted to have them in the first place since they are not capable of doing what's correct for them, only what's best for themselves in their own opinion cos they think a person who can't tolerate their choice in wharever is the unreasonable one, not them. Always without fail, someone else's fault, never theirs.
