We decided that we need a few days away to stop going stir crazy at home.....as we can't get away for more than a few days due to health, so, booked the Newhaven - Dieppe ferry for Thursday morning, left home in order to have a night in the park just outside the port..... everything fine, went and had a meal, had a wine and then went to bed....... at 00-30 a van arrived and made such a racket with doors banging and getting sorted...... anyway, back to sleep, then at 04-00 another inconsiderate b*****d arrived, not only slamming doors and shouting, but then let his sh*t machines out to run around barking and waking everyone........ We were most disappointed at this behaviour and am writing this just to remind all of us to be quiet and respectful when parking up late at night.

We are here tonight, let's hope it's quieter, otherwise will set my cat on them.

So did you get away okotherwise?
We did, as always are so happy with DFDS, not luxurious, but, nice and friendly...... we are 20mins from Portsmouth, but, with the ferry prices plus the discount for ' coffin dodgers' we are very happy to drive along the coast for the DFDS price..... would be different if we were working and had a limited time away. I would have to think twice about going on B.F. even though we have the discount...... but will keep paying the 'frequent traveller' as who knows what may happen ???
P.S..... we are now on a lovely aire with a bottle/ baguette & some seafood yesssssss

I’m sorry you were disturbed by selfish and arrogant bar stewards, a pet hate of mine.
I would be dead quiet if I rocked up some where late at night.

Something for the seagulls to fight over thrown on top of their respective roofs will get them up at first light.

Chips would be good, but otherwise little bits of bread will ensure many visits.

Ideally you want something too large and heavy for a single seagull to fly off with, attached to the roof.
A large smelly fish tied to the aerial maybe ? or jammed under the solar panel ?

One we found out from a customs officer:
Somebody had pissed off a local at a port over some issue.

The local Customs got an anonymous tip off about certain illegal substances being carried in the vehicle when it arrived in the queue for the ferry.

Full strip down, panels off, tanks drained, seats removed, carpets up, roof linings down etc.

Not only did they not make the ferry, I doubt they even made the holiday!

Yea, but they don’t have to rush

Yes a ruined holiday but I understand if nothing found then the customs have to replace everything as it was.

No they don't !

Have a Google.

Many, many, stories of vehicles being dismantled by Customs and nothing found and the owner simply handed a pile of parts and told to remove them now or they will go for recycling.

Apparently there is even a specialist garage in Dover who will pick up your vehicle and parts, and put it back more or less as it was.
(But only once you have sorted out if it's you or your insurer who is paying for it!)

sorry to hear of your experience, but i am sure you are aware that there is a VERY cheap overnight stopover just around the corner ...... its worth paying £10 for decent nights sleep prior to getting the early morning ferry rather than having people roll up at all hours. it is a working port after all ....

They didn’t park at the Port. They said they’d parked outside the Port and it wasn’t Port noise that woke them it was inconsiderate dog owners. They are everywhere. A minority of course but it only takes one. Most are very considerate especially Funsters before anyone bites my head off!

Thanks Carolyn...... you are right

I find other motorhomers on park ups to be the noisiest and most inconsiderate between banging doors and lockers to running engines to charge batteries or run aircon etc . .or just breaking the no camping rules with chairs or whatever. It's why I try my damdest to park away from them lol .. but sure as hell some bugger will come park beside me.

I'll take the boyracers etc anyday their usually quieter

And you think that's acceptable?

And you think that's acceptable?
Not at all.
However that is the way it is, and not just in the UK, I think you will find all other Customs Services globally do the same thing.

We used to have ships delayed, sometimes for weeks, at a cost of thousands of dollars a day.
Nothing we could do to claim the money back.

No different to HMRC carrying out a VAT inspection on your business. The entire cost of the inspection is down to you, including all accountants fees and any loss of revenue etc. We have insurance to cover the cost as it can be significant.

Accountant always said that to us.I always told him"don't worry I am never going to be paying you to attend a vat inspection." Not a chance.

on the occasions I have had dealings with them & police at Dover I always point out that they are going to be finishing a shift eventually, so there is no need to be awkward & offensive.

We try what we can to be consideration regards noise but unfortunately our sliding van door needs a bit of a slam to close it.

At 7am you should have returned the favour.
They will have been driving til they arrived and probably wouldn't appreciate you banging doors, shouting and generally causing mayhem when they're trying to sleep.
Karma!

we always sleep over and catch the 6am train, and its common to be woken up by slamming doors and excited people and it annoys and pisses us off of course. But here is the thing, if you start the karma/revenge route all you do is increase the likelyhood of it bouncing back at you again another day as everyone tried for revenge. I have never once seen a selfish / thoughtless person's learn from the mistakes. Children/ teenagers/ yoof are thoughtless and selfish and self obsessed but most grow up to be almost human but it takes decades not minutes. So... let it go - smile and grit your teeth - your going on holiday !

having said that i love the seagull idea, its clever and your not blamed ( unless your caught )
:)

The OP states he lives 20 mins from ferry port.
Surely it would be more comfortable to drive to ferry in morning than having a disturbed night.
Alternatively there is a campsite closely at Seaford 5 mins away.
He said he lived 20 minutes from Portsmouth not Newhaven which was why he'd driven there the previous evening to overnight.

Thanks Carolyn...... you are right
Point taken from you both .... as the OP had said they were parked just outside the port I assumed that they were on the lanes to check in?
Perhaps you could advise exactly where you were parked please, so others could avoid it?
