What three words

W3W is like everything in life the more you use it the better and quicker it becomes natural to use. Play with it go for a run or walk and experiment. After a couple of hours you will be almost an expert 🧭🧭😂

Landlines. We have about 3,000 landlines which use a generic outgoing number. All it will do is tell the emergency services youre in the 200 interesting acres I look after. I cant even tell you which phone was used but would have to wake up our IT department.
Post Codes, cover the same amount of area as we have our own "Post Office" so no post is delivered any residence but to Central Stores where it is collected.
GPS co ords. They have their uses, I understand them, but if giving them verbally to another there are 14 characters to remember in order. 3 characters stands a significantly better chance of being remembered or clarified. Sort of like a speed dial

The speed of using W3W in order to pass over the information may be imperative. I just tried it on my phone.
It took me nearly 6 seconds to turn my phone on, open the app, and have the "share button" available to me.
My phone is not the quickest. Can you find your GPS co ordinates as quickly as that ? Can the person on the other end find your position as quickly ?

We still use the system that all emergencies have to go through us. So any job, be it heart attack, building on fire, RTC etc has to be called through us and this has been proven to be invaluable as I dont have to send a resource to go and meet and greet and get the professionals to the right place.

These are the reasons we use W3W. I used it twice yesterday with emergency services. That is probably about average at the moment. So i know the locals use it and value it.
They like it as it helps, they use it and find it very useful, I would tend to take more notice of their opinion than some people who havent used it.

it takes the same time to get your gps location and as far as your phone numbers are concerned they will all link to the same main number as will DDI the routing and records of a companies phone system will tell them the building the lines are terminated in. Your phone systems internal records ( if you have bothered to keep them) will tell you which device and where it is located so you would have to trace the number internally against your records.

GPS is as instant as W3W W3W is no smarter or dumber than GPS it is designed for people who cannot use or do not understand GPS. GPS can be far more accurate

just to add it’s highly unlikely any company has 3000 land lines you probably have ISDN 30 or a SIP gateway and have 3000 numbers allocated to around 10 or 20 ISDN 30 lines

Postcodes huh I guess you never receive a parcel or letter then ;) but you will need a house number or name to go with it
We do, but there are times many where we have delivery drivers asking us where so n só house is, whatsit cottage or thingymybob farm... our postcode is 1/2 a mile long on one side of one road but have the properties only have names, no numbers! Not everyone makes them easily accessible either... W3W takes you right to their front door!

Can I just ask why your posts are so anti-W3W? It is surely a matter of choice and no one is forcing anyone to use one particular method. Personally, I have no desire to acquaint myself with the intricacies of an out-of-date concept such as gps co-ordinates.
At least your posts are keeping the thread going and highlighting how great W3W is to people who haven't come across it before 🤣🤣

Give me your GPS and I can find you just as easily W3W is just another iteration of something that exists. If you choose to use it that's fine but I have no 'need' to
I can’t remember my GPS but I can remember W3W!

I just don’t need it my watch and phone display GPS there are apps you can use that display your position on a map and you can share your gps with text or email. It just duplicates what is available. It’s not ‘new’ it’s not amazing it’s just another thing I don’t need.

Well don't have it then and maybe lighten up on the negative/slightly argumentative posts?

Aaaaaagh - Then don't use it! But don't decry others that might - for whatever reason - find it useful.

Has it occurred to you that there are individuals who aren't great at 'numbers', or there are others that just enjoy the novelty of trying out something new/different to see if it works for them?

It's clear that you won't be converted, and nor should you be if you don't want to be. It's just not necessary to try and shoot everyone else down in flames just because you don't agree with them. Move on maybe?

Longitude and latitude works just as well and can be more accurate. Whilst a previous post says it’s faster I suspect it is not that much faster than typing in the longitude and latitude or postcode and house number
All very useful if you have a house nearby and you happen to know it’s post code. Not many people can work out grid refs but I suspect everyone can read three words. Having worked in emergency services for thirty years I have many times struggled with callers descriptions of where they are. Quite possibly the worst offenders for terrible addresses were the police. What3words is a great tool to have at our disposal.

I still use the stars.... if they were good enough for the three wise men then they are good enough for me :ROFLMAO:
Star Alighn is good enough for Celestron telescope so you can trace a planet or other celestial body don't knock it ;)

im not shooting down others but as I say its just re-ineventing what exists a quick screen grab gave me longitude and latitude just enter the numbers and you can see where I was and where the Al Packers can be viewed :)

You can have app that will pin point your location on a map and that you can share if you choose W3W I have no issue but its just another variant

And the point of this post is? I got out a pen and a piece of paper and I copied down your co-ordinates and then I typed them into Google maps and found the location you indicated. And it took me a couple of minutes.

Your points in order.
Try finding your GPS on your phone and sending it to someone. 6 seconds to beat from turning your phone on.
IT are contacted if i need them. If it is not Monday to Friday 9-5 i need to contact them. I will then need specific information to give them. All time consuming, whilst juggling.
GPS can (or is) more accurate than W3W. A 1 metre square is sufficient for my purposes and many people.
We have 3,000 ish extensions then. All of which use the same outgoing number when making an external call. Same issue different way of getting to the problem.

If GPS is the all encompassing quick response locater for the app age, why do the emergency services prefer W3W ? Speed and ease of use for the "people who cannot use or do not understand GPS" would be my answer.

where am I ?

I beleive GPS accuracy now is down to about 1 foot, w3w is 3 metres I believe, but I find w3w much more user friendly
