Carlisle is about two hours away from Irvine. so perhaps base your search around there...
Depends what you want in a "site"...
You can overnight on the car park at Asda just off Jct 44 of the M6
or
as suggested above, the C&CC site at Moffat about 1/2 hr north is very nice with all the bells & whistles .
or
if you want an independent site there is http://www.cressfieldpark.com/ just off the M74 across the border which has a connection to our very own @keith of the Pub Stop Map fame.

Without knowing what you want perhaps have a look at www.searchforsites.co.uk and then ask for advice on any you like the look of?

Irvine? That's Wee Nippy Nicola's town, not Borders but West of Scotland. Moffat would be my choice.

We like Englethwaite club site near Carlisle when in the area. No facilities but ok for a nice.
Visited Irvine when kids were young and staying at Culzean campsite. Seem to remember there was a big science centre there that kept them occupied.

actual, it's not that bad.. has a really nice beach.. you can park at the river mouth by the beach

when I was a kid was a member of the Irvine canoe club and enjoyed paddling on the river Irvine, right down to the river mouth and into the sea.. this was before it was developed and became an over-spill town for Glasgow.. My dad was the manager in the SSEB shop .. long since gone.. as is the SSEB

There is a good sports centre and large shopping mall..
