The "free" travel insurance is for up to 31 days only, but with an option to pay extra to extend that.
Has anyone done that, and was it horrendously expensive or not?
(PS, it also includes European breakdown cover for motorhomes up to 8.0 metres and 7.5 tonnes.)

Yes, I upgraded mine to 90 days. If am away for longer, I just fly home fora couple of days. I pay around £200 per year, but have existing medical problem cover for that as well as breakdown cover. Have not had to use the breakdown cover, but have used the medical.

Thanks Snowbird, but I'm a bit confused. Is that £200 over and above the £120 (£10 per month) you pay to have the FlexPlus account?

I dont pay £120 year, only about £40, as I get the full interest on the £2500 which I keep in there. The £40 is good value for breakdown cover, phone insurance and all the other perks. The £200 excess is just for the extended medical insurance. With my medical history I could not get travel insurance at any price elsewhere.

We have similar with the Halifax Reward Account. Upgraded to 93 days and declared existing medical conditions and we paid an additional £224.38 The travel insurance policy is through Axa. This premium is in addition to the £10 monthly fee for the Reward Account. Forgot to mention also that Im 65 which seems to be the age at which the hefty premiums start to get heftier.

I have a flexplus account and got a quote from them and I think to extend to 90 days was either £60 or £90. If you call them they will tell you straight away. Mine was for Europe only.
I wasn't happy with the skiing cover so ended up with another annual policy with LV which I am very pleased with and was competitive. A possible alternative - this included a couple of pre existing medical conditions as well.

I got 125 days medical/travel insurance from "Just Travel Insurance" for £162 - it was £105 originally but after declaring all our medical histories it went up to £162.

Of course there is one thing to remember about the Nationwide travel insurance, it is WORLDWIDE, not restricted to Europe. With my existing medical history £200 per year for unlimited trips of 90 days is fantastic value for money. Before obtaining the Nationwide package I enquired about compulsory travel insurance to Cuba for 14 days and the best quote I could get was £1800. The world is now my oyster again, as many visas will not be given without travel insurance.

The other bonus with flex plus is it lets you draw cash from the ATMs abroad without charges. The Visa rate they use is also very good. Just like the old debit card used to be from Nationwide.

On our Lloyds account I paid £70 to extend it from 45 days to 60 days can extend up to 120 days. Lloyds has about the biggest list of medical conditions you don't have to declare. The account pays 4% intrest on 4 - 5k and for us we only pay half he monthly fee as boss is a Lloyds pensioner.

As far as am aware there is no time limit on the breakdown cover.

Let's face it with electronic ticketing, data protection rules, flexible tickets etc. They will be relying on your information in regard to your travel dates.

As Snowbird states, the cover is WORLDWIDE. We were quoted £180 to upgrade for our medical problems but opted to accept "no cover for existing problems" in Europe at zero cost: I'm pretty sure that EHIC will cover anything that happens - Gordon

I have just speed read their pre existing rules. They leave a bit to be desired. Before I book world wide med insurance I get my GP to list and sign any pre existing from my med history. I think this is the only safe way to do it. Refusal to pay med bills in the US could be a financial disaster. No idea what med history you have Snowbird but £200 for the year worldwide sounds pretty cheap to me.

It is cheap. Having been a Nationwide member for many years with there Flexaccount I was asked to "upgrade" to there Flexplus acc. After I told them there would be no benefit for me as I had pre existing meds that would not be covered they made an appointment for me to go into the branch and speak to the underwriter via phone. I took a copy of my meds and also a copy of my hospital treatments during the last 10 years. All was faxed to the underwriter as we spoke on the phone. It did take around 2 hours to sort out and am now on my second years term of insurance with them. I have had a claim whilst in Spain last winter and had to pay the 50 Euro excess, so I know it works.
