I have just seen a piece on the South East News tonight relating to when the Sea froze at Herne Bay. Temperatures fell to minus 20c!! I remember it well as I was in my last year at school in Canterbury, ten miles by bus (if it managed to get out to our village) if the bus failed we, my elder sister and I drover to Canterbury in my fathers 1946 Citroen light 15.
Being front wheel drive it coped well but she reminded me tonight that we did have to have two runs at a hill near the village of Shatterling when the main road was blocked by drifts. Did I miss any school ? No. Although we had no games until Easter that year because the ground was concrete with frost. No Central heating in the farmhouse, scrape the ice the windows in the mornings. How times have changed ,Now at the first sign of snow we are told stay indoors. only go out if necessary. Must now dash to check the Smart Meter!!
