I have just seen a piece on the South East News tonight relating to when the Sea froze at Herne Bay. Temperatures fell to minus 20c!! I remember it well as I was in my last year at school in Canterbury, ten miles by bus (if it managed to get out to our village) if the bus failed we, my elder sister and I drover to Canterbury in my fathers 1946 Citroen light 15.
Being front wheel drive it coped well but she reminded me tonight that we did have to have two runs at a hill near the village of Shatterling when the main road was blocked by drifts. Did I miss any school ? No. Although we had no games until Easter that year because the ground was concrete with frost. No Central heating in the farmhouse, scrape the ice the windows in the mornings. How times have changed ,Now at the first sign of snow we are told stay indoors. only go out if necessary. Must now dash to check the Smart Meter!!

Me too - snowed-in in the Lincolnshire Wolds……. 🥶

I remember walking on the sea at Prestatyn. 5 years old

10th Jan 1982 at 6.30am I went past the weather station at Harper Adams on my trusty Honda 90 on my way to work,no wonder I was felt cold! soon warmed up though as there were 300 cows to be fed by hand as all the machinery was frozen solid 😳

I was 15 years old when I joined the Army in January 1963. I remember standing outside the Army Apprentices College cookhouse at 6.30 on the first morning, clutching my newly issued crockery. On entering the cookhouse the cook slapped a fried egg onto my plate and it promptly froze onto it!
Happy days... not!

Great memories winter 1963 for me, running around with my mates as a 10 year old in my shorts having Carob fights on the waste ground behind the army base at Episkopi Cyprus. Strange, 60 years on we are again in Cyprus just down the road at Paphos (y)
