Could some bright person tell me if that is 6 full months ie 1st OCT 2021 to 1st April 2022 OR say the middle of OCT 2021 to the middle of APRIL 2022?

John ......someone who is confused!

Hi John,

It's 6-months from the actual day you leave the UK.

All the best,

Andrew

Also note:
It is six months remaining on your passport, 10 years FROM DATE OF ISSUE !

Many UK passports have extra months added, as if you handed in your old passport for renewal after 9 years they would issue a passport valid for 11 years.
This is no longer recognised, so even if you have a year left on your passport, if it was issued over 9.5 years ago it will not be valid for travel.
My passport is an 11 year one, so will not be valid for travel in the last year of use.

What this means in reality is a 10 year passport is only valid for 9.5 years maximum, which means at a stroke they have cut the length by 10% which will increase their revenue by at least this amount, all by a little change of rule.

Why, with six months left, it can’t be used, when the longest we can stay in Europe is 90 days in 180. I guess it’s another hidden tax. If you apply early for a new one, you also lose the original renewal date. Whereas previously, it would have been from the renewal date.

I don't know why the UK government's website says we need 6 months on our passport to travel....in many (maybe even most!) cases that's totally wrong. I guess they think its too complicated to tell people to check the rules for the country they want to visit so just give the worst case.

For Schengen countries you need 3 months validity beyond your date of return. For the USA it only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay. Other countries will have their own rules - check them on their own government websites....don't rely on 3rd party or other countries' information.

Brains, my passport is dated
Day of issue15 December 2011
Expiry....15 April 2022 .......which is 10 years and 4 months
Where do stand I am more confused than ever.
I was hoping to go away to one one of the Green listed Islands in late September which I thought would satisfy the six month rule.

Strange, mine was issued on a date in 2013 and expires on exactly the same date in 2023, so 10.00 years. You must have been lucky.
The 6-months remaining is NOT a UK issue but from the country you are visiting, e.g. "To avoid possible problems at immigration, make sure your passport is valid for a minimum of 180 days at the time of entry into India." from the gov.uk web page.

I'd start here:

It depends on where you're planning to travel, but if the islands you're talking about are in Europe, then effectively your passport is valid until December 2021 (ie. 10 years from date of issue). So taking into account the need to have 3 months remaining, you need to leave the Schengen zone by the 14th or 15th (not sure exactly how they count it) September 2021.

If you're talking about "green listed islands" elsewhere, then it depends on which islands they are and their own specific rules.

I’ve just had a text from uk gov. stating passport has to have at 6 months on it when travelling

After reading another similar thread on Fun a couple of days ago I checked our passports.
I knew they expired next June (2022) but had forgotten that we renewed them early, it was almost 10 years ago after all. I discovered that we renewed in March, three months early, which means the EU won’t recognise them beyond March 2022 ie. 10 years from the start date.
That also means that to comply with the six months left to run rule they will expire in September, just when we hope to be in France.
New passports applied for yesterday and just hoping that the Passport Office is a bit lot more efficient than the useless DVLA.
It is a bit annoying that we lose 11 months and have to shell out £75.50 each for the pleasure.

Richard.

If you were planning on coming home before December then you could have used your old ones....France (and the rest of Schengen) only require 3 months validity. The UK government website is wrong when it says everywhere needs 6 months.

Therefore to all intents and purposes your passport expires on 15th December 2021.

Which means to have 6 months validity on your departure date you would have needed to have left the UK before the 14th June 2021.

Whilst, in theory, for the EU you may get away with only 3 months validity, the first passport check you have to go through is in the UK, and the UK Government is saying 6 months minimum validity.

I'd strongly recommend you apply for a new passport now if you are intending on travelling before next year.
