We've recently bought a rather tired 1998 Hymer motorhome. The seats had aftermarket covers on them, which stank of tobacco and didn't fit very well. We just happened to have some suitable material available: Jan did the stitching and I helped with the stretching! This is the result. The other one will be finished tomorrow. We didn't fancy a trip to the upholsterers anyway...

A nice job you've made of it! (y)
They look exactly like our Isri Sears, minus the arm rests.

fit them and if a little wrinkled or baggy, steam them in place on the seats and they will shrink to fit

Not as quick as Regal as there was a steep learning curve involved, and being over 70 our hands aren't as nimble and strong as they were when we were cranking sailing yacht winches! About two man days each to unpick the old covers and cut and sew up.

All you need to do now is get that table chopped & hinged out of the way!

The first cab seats I reupholstered for a conversion I did was a very steep learning curve but great fun with the guidance of a retired upholsterer thankfully. No patterns available, so we went to a rally and removed the cab seats. The upholsterer cut the material and pinned it sat in the shade of a tree, explaining what she was doing and what was needed as we went along. I then removed the pinned covers and refitted the seats. By the next weekend out, we met up again and she cast an eye over the now sewn and fitted covers. That is when she explained steaming the covers to create a perfect fit

I was really proud of the fit and finish of that van and wish we had kept it longer, it was a cracking layout. A big galley kitchen, a big transverse bathroom across the rear, 2 singles or a massive double up front, with a single bunk that hinged down by the sliding side door. If I was to convert another van for our use, this design would be our starting template

Well done. Regal told us they couldn't reupholster our Isri seats because we wanted new foam in it as it's a bit flattened.

Denise
they said that as it's a lot more involved than cutting and sewing a set from templates, it would take a lot of hours and the skill of a specialist upholsterer. I used to have a guy locally that could work wonders with carved foam and an old seat frame for custom cars. Not cheap, but the finished interiors were award winning. Sadly he reached that age where it was too heavy and hard work for him. His son wasn't interested so the business was sold on. The new people were rubbish and the place closed within the year

Anything can be reupholstered with the right skill set and money

John Barrett if you have saved the unpicked parts of the old covers, a set of templates could be made from them for future use or to pass on to others

We have a guy locally who has said he will do them but we need to get the seats out and take them to him! No idea how much he'd charge though.

Please can I ask a question about your excellent upholstery job, I’m trying to cover my aguti seats and am struggling to get the covers to fit flush against the seats? The originals seem clipped in? Is this how yours are sitting so snugly?

any top tips greatly appreciated, thanks

the seams and darts affect the way the cover fits and looks to the eye when fitted

There, are two pieces of material attached which are looped onto the back and seat. These take a piece of steel rod which is tied back into the seat frame which provides the necessay tension. There are Youtube videos around describing this arrangement.
