I've been updating my fuel usage worksheet today and thought it might be interesting for others to see my findings seeing as your 'nattering' about mileages.

We collected the van at the end of August 2012 with approx 900 miles on (2 months old) but I didn't keep any mileage records until the first 'full' tank of fuel by which time it had done 2,466 miles; at the time of the last 'full' tank it had done exactly 13,670 miles. I've split the figures into 3 sections as each then has one major holiday in it:

  • November 2012 to June 2013 incl:
over 4,661 miles and 743.13 litres = av MPG of 28.54
(worst 24.61 mpg; best 30.94 mpg)
  • July to December 2013 incl:
over 3,344 miles and 486.35 litres = av MPG of 31.28
(worst 27.77 mpg; best 36.72 mpg ... yes really!)
  • 2014 - January to 10 July incl:
over 3,199 miles and 491 litres = av MPG of 29.65

(worst 26.25 mpg; best 33.39 mpg)
Taking it all together though produces an average to date of 29.57 MPG.

I've also had a look at the figures in between fills and it appears that as the van gets more miles on the MPG has improved - looking at this year's section figures between fills we often got well over 30 mpg with just a couple of low MPG sections bringing the overall average figure down. So despite it dipping down a bit this year (due to 'somebody' enjoying the speed so a bit too much when driving  ) I'm sure we'd get closer to the mid 30s. :)

My insurance company reckons the average motorhome does 3500 miles per annum.

What about dealerships, how many miles do they like to see a motorhome cover per annum?

On and off for many years.
Our 4 year old MH had 9,100 on it when we bought it two months ago. It now has nearly 11,000 miles on it.

Don't just look at the miles on the clock but check everything else as well. The MH could have been driven to Spain once and lived in for 11 months then driven back....... lots of wear on the interior but low mileage.

We contacted the previous owner and asked questions.
