Morning all.

Can I ask a question of the MHF users please?
If your van was of a certain age and had everything you needed in terms of layout, storage etc but was just starting to look it’s age with the orangey wood effect becoming too much after a while, would you ever consider taking your motorhome somewhere ( or someone comes to you) to get all the internal cabinetry etc resprayed?
I ask this because in the main, motorhomes look great but can look dated quite quickly but a simple colour change could then give a few more years happy useage.
To remain transparent, I operate a furniture, kitchen, windows etc spraying business and consider a motorhome to be no more difficult than respraying an in situ kitchen in someone’s home and I’m trying to gauge interest, or not.
Thanks 😊
Steve

People often update the soft furnishings in a van and the wood less so. However, I imagine, with people keeping their vans longer and longer, I think you could get quite a bit of business if it was a tidy job and you had a lot of before n after photos (y)

Yes I would depending on the price and if it would be worthwhile investing into an old van .

but I would as it’s not going anywhere yet. So far spend more than it’s worth but it was never about making money or getting back what we paid for it .

already done all the furnishings but had to leave the woodwork . But bright and shinny sounds good.

as above images of old and new would aid your progress.

approx how long would something like this take. Ooopppsss shown some interest already..

I would be concerned about it peeling or chipping off after a couple of years and looking even worse 🤔
Hi Richard.
Modern coatings are pretty sophisticated and once cured, will easily see out the 10 years we guarantee them for on internal fixtures.
Obviously, if you throw a hammer at it, it’ll mark but then so would your original laminate.
The coating we use is the same as Howdens use on their bespoke kitchen ranges.
It’s a pretty well respected industrial coating.
Thanks
Steve

Most of the woodwork seems to be a thin layer of wood looking paper not so much laminate on the older Moho.
i have a combination of wood veneer some laminate on flat surfaces and looks to be paper on the sides of walls with extruded plastic trims.

so whatever is used will have to be designed for all this type of surfaces.

most of Howdens is chipboard and Medford with a coating of melamine.
some are however painted softwood like oak furniture land.

I am in the process of ‘discussion’ with a company to dye our leather a different colour. It seems the previous owners fake tan fettish didn’t help the cream leather interior!! 🤬

Not sure I would want to touch the cabinets TBH.

Why not simply wrap/vinyl the cupboards etc? Not done it myself but on all accounts, the results look amazing. plus if you want to save some money, you could DIY it.

There are a few faces on our van that could do with a recoat, give me a shout and if the price is right you can have a go at it.

I have an older quality MH an N&B Arto (2003) and am happy with the solid interior.

I think any potential buyer, and there are a lot of owners who consider pre-2006 builds as being superior plus not having difficult ECUs, who would be disappointed to find that the furniture had not been retained in its original look - they are not buyingg quality to find it has been 'modernised' into a spray-coated interior to look like a cheap new MH.

Think, why is antique furniture more valuable than IKEA?

We're having ours done here in Spain. The van already doesn't owe us anything, so when we eventually decide to sell we're not bothered if it's not original. We prefer to have the pleasure of having a brighter, fresher, interior look whilst we are still using it.

I’ll answer in detail in due course but I think you might be missing the point comparing antique furniture to a motorhome interior.
Thanks

Vinyl wrapping isn’t complete. It’s the face side only and is only as good as the substrate, primer and the applicator.
Vinyl is the only option for a grained or textured surface requirement though.
Thanks

Yes. Friends of mine fairly recently bought a VW coach build in good order but with a solid but very dated looking interior. They re-finished/painted all the cupboards, and re-did the upholstery. The difference was absolutely astounding (in a very good way). They didn't change anything in terms of layout, just the look.

As said. Plenty of people have their home kitchens painted, and it now big business. It lasts well, and can be repaired should there be a problem. Most of the home kitchens that are done are far more complicated and less clean than the average Moho.

Good business idea. Go for it 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks for your reply.
I’m certainly not suggesting a recolour is in anyway a replacement for originality, nor is it everyone’s cup of tea.
If I use my own situation as an example.
I might never have bought a motorhome had I not been able to get it reasonably cheap. Mine cost the thick end of £8000 to buy-I also have 2 kids, 2 dogs, a beautiful wife (😊) .
An horrific expense! 🙂
I did only buy it though because I knew I had the facilities, tools and a bit of enthusiasm to strip it back and start again. Check my media files to see what went on.
One thing I did know at the beginning though was I didn’t want the early 2000’s orange furniture board everywhere. I’m nearly 50 and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in that?
Anyway, I spent a load of money and time bringing it upto date in terms of the way it looks inside; I could have spent thousands more doing the upholstery too, but my pockets have a bottom to them and refused to spend anymore.
The point being is that I would have loved a newer van - I look at newer vans all the time and I simply couldn’t afford to get one with a new interior like mine for my available budget- but my disposable cash and the time available using it wasn’t going to be high, or a top priority, so it means I have a MH that is pretty tidy on the inside and won’t scare the kids now because it was born in the black and white era ( according to them) but I don’t have a financial situation that costs me monthly.
A colour change, along with handle and hinge renewal could quite easily be the difference between getting a MH or keeping one a little bit longer.
Thanks
Steve

No I wouldn’t. But that’s because I’m as tight as a fishes botty under water, and ,anyway,I like the look of old stuff.
But your plan sounds good.

That’s great!
Maybe I’ll branch out into Spain!
That’s sounds perfect! 😊

I think the cost would be similar to the cost of a kitchen.
Anywhere from £625 - £2345 plus Vat.
Naturally, the cost increases with the complexity of the project and the distance. As with kitchens, we’d remove all that was removable and take away to our factory and spray booth.
We prepare and recolour and then leave the components to cure for a few days. In the meantime, we’d come back and prepare your motorhome for the recolour, that means cleaning, abrading, small damage repair and full masking out of the motorhome.
We use extraction fans to limit overspray and odour, remove all the masking aids and then return the following day to refit.
If new handles are required and don’t fit existing holes, we’ll deal with at the factory.
All this takes about 5 days to complete, depending on workload.
Of course, it’ll be better doing the update when you are not planning on using the MH for a couple of weeks.
I hope this helps?
Thanks
Steve

I recently saw a van that was "updated" with the use of carbon fibre look vinyl wrap and 2 tone grey paint. Whereas it looked ok, it had a very limited market appeal when being sold
