Just bought first motorhome
We’re really keen to buy a 5 year old Hymer that’s up for sale through motorhome depot. It’s only done 3000 miles in the last 3 years and it hasn’t been serviced since the 2 year point. We’ve offered the asking price if it has a full service and cam belt change, the seller has said he’ll get an oil and filter change done but that’s our lot. I don’t know if we’re being over cautious or if the seller is hiding something. What would you do?

If its what you really want then I say go for it
There will be doubts about any purchase
Especially after covid when explanation sounds very plausible
Get it and enjoy it

I would get a price for a cambelt change for whatever the model of Hymer it is ( an A class could be expensive) and offer this much less , at least if you get it done yourself you know for a fact it has been replaced as required at 5 years whatever the miles done. (assuming it has a belt and not a chain)

Personally I would not be that concerned about the lack of service at 3000 miles .
The cam belt would be the one I would be pushing for.
However, if it ticks all your boxes then would you want to loose it for the price of a cam belt change.

With that low mileage it's obviously stood for long periods of time. This won't have helped the belts as they'll perish. Mine were changed after 4.5 years and were totally shot. I was fortunate they hadn't snapped.

When looking at service Fiat regeem is every two years so not a problem and it’s not even got anywhere near being run in so I would get a service and cam belt change out of it if you can negotiate that’s just cost me £1600 so that’s a realistic figure to ask🤔

I think it was a mistake offering the asking price although don’t know if it was cheap anyway.

They would surely factor in a price expecting a lower offer.

Offer 3 grand less sold as seen and get it all done yourself.

Be prepared to walk away there’s plenty of vans out there.

As it’s a Motorhome then yes, look at the MOT records and see how far it’s gone.

Vans are often stood around for long periods of time during and prior to conversion. Provided there are no evidence of tyre damage , cracking or bulges they are likely to be fine.

It would all depend on the model and engine along with the asking price. If it happens to be one of the last Fiat 3.0 liter engine there is a chain, not a belt.
If it’s the DL it won’t have 3l engine I think they were discontinued more than five years ago🤔

B444 DL by the looks of it on a 2.3 Ducato base.

If it's been standing for long periods, which it has, then the Cam belt definitely requires changing.

If you really, really want it...

Personally I'd speak to the Salesman and ask him to take 33% of the hit for the cam belt change, the seller can take 33% and you take 34%, I wouldn't be concerned about the service history on a van with 8000 miles on it.

Cheers
Red.

Edit: Added If you really really want it...

At the end of the day it's a 5 year old van with 3000 miles on the clock. If you can get some money off all the better. But remember it's a sellers market. The seller can find some inexperienced punter who knows nothing of cracked tyres and cam belts. It's only done 3000 miles why worry? If it a good price and if its what you want, get as much off as you can then get it.

Have you actually looked at the Hymer, the 444dl is sub 6 metres and the layout was not a popular one.

Is this the one

Nice looking van :giggle:

A full mechanical service & MOT maybe be £400+ or more - I'd be wary of the brakes and vans that stand still for long periods, the cambelt may be anything up around £1,000, tyres could be £500, and a habitation check will be up to £200. The water ingress warranty has not been maintained. I wouldn't like to use a van that's not had a gas and electric check by a qualified technician.

So if you have the money, it's what you want, and you have some knowledge of motorhomes, go for it. Me? I'd walk away because I don't take known risks with my tens of thousands and family.

I’d buy it. Initially offering £1000 off for required work, and be hopeful of getting a deal. If not buy it and sort your self. I definitely wouldn’t want to work done by the person selling it. You will never know if it was done or not, it certainly won’t be the quantity parts, it will just be the cheap and basic stuff.

In January our van was just past 2 years old. Hab check and full service was £500.
Ok we had this done it’s on a Fiat 2.3 150 bhp.
Recently spoke with dealers and the confirm a full service was done. Excellent.
A full service every 2 years now has a recommended by them interim service at a whopping £350.
Full is now £450 and a hab check now £300
So service and habitation £750 completed in just over half a day. Talk about easy money.
We will stick with the 2 year service and get someone local to do a habitation check although I’m still to be convinced I need that every year.

If I was buying a second hand van so long as hab has been done before you collect I don’t see a problem. As has been said I’d be as concerned about the tyres
