Report from another forum (oh yes they do exist) in Germany.

The trigger was the fire in a Concorde Charisma, which was completely burned out and had affected 2 other WoMo's before the fire department could arrive.

Regardless of whether it is a liner hit or not, I wish those affected the best of luck that the damage can be repaired smoothly. People are said not to have been harmed by the media. Thank God!

With a fire that ferocious I don't know if 6 metres of separation would have made that much difference. It might have slowed things down and allowed others to move out of the danger zone had they been in their vans. The report did say the vans that were destroyed belonged to people working in the area and they were unoccupied at the time of the fire.

I'm glad no one was hurt and hope that their insurance pays out fast.

Maybe not for the vans in the immediate vicinity, but if all the vans are close together the fire services are stuck. With 6m around each van, the fire services can get in anywhere they like to fight the fires and save other vans (y)

Which is why we have the 6m rule at rallies :) It's not to be difficult or awkward but for safety and security.

The reality is that the separation distance is of more importance now than it ever was, as fire services no longer have attendance times to meet. In rural areas it was 20 mins (though in remote areas it was unspecified)

For a fire to be of such radiant heat output to impact significantly on a vehicle for fire spread 6m away, it's a hell of a fire loading.

I've always thought and still do that 6m is overkill, HOWEVER to reduce that distance would just cause more confusion and should only be done so if a competent fire risk assessment has been carried out AND recorded (not just the significant findings)

Tbf this is a rare occurrence. Thousand of mh's are parked on aires an d stellplatze every day yet this still makes the news as an extraordinary occurrence.

6m? Not in this case. This rule is only advisory not compulsory.

Although there is no law about vans being 6m apart

If a van burned and damaged another that was closer than 6m. Then loss adjusters might be looking to apportion some blame and be asking the rally marshals/us. "Why did you ignore industry best practice and not keep at least 6m between vans?

I thought the 6m rule only applies to items used for habitation? I know on CMHC sites have insisted the 6m rule between motorhome and caravans due to the habitation part but then the tuggers can park a bloody car between the two as its not "lived in" even though it would still help the fire spread.

It is one of the main reasons I do not like busy aires. A fire in the night could take out a lot of vans and people but thankfully this is very very rare.

That’s another Concorde I won’t be buying.

Articles like this make me worry about those Aires that have vans so close you could hear them fart. Happened to us once on an stellplats by lake constance. Everyone respected other people’s space and there was room for everyone and pitches were marked out, well a nice Mh owner and his Hymer decided to park a whisker from our van. We could see what they were eating through the window. we left the next day to go to Mosel. Has put hubby off ever going again. I loved the area.

If you like the neighbours up close and comfy go to Capbreton, West Coast of France ???

This picture looks like the rule hasn’t been observed by CMC.

The six metre rule applies to the living unit, which looking at that picture they are.

Didn't look like the gas bottles went up though. The explosion was a tyre I think - an LPG bleve is much more impressive / terrifying / loud. And on at least one van the gas locker was intact.

With a car next to it ?
Yeah, the car is not considered the living unit. Strange as it could help the fire spread from one living unit to the other but that is what the CMHC set the rules out to.

I wonder how they decided on,6m was there any science behind it, just a guess?. I think once someone comes up with a figure it becomes a norm for the insurance.

It looks OK to me.

Pictures like that can be really deceiving. I've looked at our rally fields with the same perspective and think WTF, but when you walk over there and pace it out it's fine.

JFF: you have to be alert for harm done by the media. paparazzi et al

Good that no one was harmed by the fire incident.
