Does it allow movement of the bit that’s above it? So when you tighten screw it widens and holds its place?

Got one as well and no idea what it's for so took it apart and there is a spring under the long bit.

All I can think of is its to keep the flyscreen in the closed position by pushing it upwards.

Could be wrong and have been on numerous occasions
