Hi
Our planned trip to Austria and Germany in December has been cancelled due to increased restrictions and lockdown.

We now intend to do a couple of weeks in Scotland. We live in Devon, so will take a few days to drive up , spend a week or so in the highlands then take a nice few days to drive back via Edinburgh for some Xmas shopping.

We are fully winterised and hoping to find some snowy conditions for walks and scenery in the highlands.

Anyone able to recommend some nice sites that are open in December and that can fit our 8.2 metre Dethleffs.

Thinking Aviemore or Glencoe at the moment , but would love to hear some recommendations.
Ideally we’d like to be near to a village or town so that we can walk in for the odd visit to a pub or go out for the odd meal etc.

Thankyou in advance
Russ

My go to places would be Grantown on Spey and Braemar 👍

Just checked Braemar, it’s no longer caravan and motorhome club, not sure when or why but still a great location

Yes to town no to distillery, I am not a whiskey drinker so not critical for me, plenty to look for around there though. There is a whisky trail in the Grantown area

If you do visit Granton on Spey try Craig's Bar for the best pub pies I've ever tasted, the ale is good as well.

We've stayed at the Mar Lodge Estate, Braemar car park a few times It's an National Trust Scotland site and as we are member we get free parking, having said that, the ticket machines haven't worked for months so everybody gets free parking. A lot of walkers leave there vehicles there and go off wild camping for a night or two. Obliviously this has no facilitys, for that we stay at caravan club CL's most of which are on farms and remain open all year, a lot of private sites close for the winter. I use the search for sites website even for CL's as the search facility on the caravan club site is rubbish.

Would normally use search for sites , but as it will be winter I’m aiming to use bigger sites with electric hookup for heating and facilities for warm shower etc.

we are here at the moment! Expensive, but beautiful! Walking distance to Glencoe village, we overlook the Loch. We have also just left Glenmore camping in the Forest site on Loch Morlich - cheaper, but no wifi, tv or phone signal, which is more important to us in the winter.

Thanks so for the info about glenmore. My wife and daughter would be very unhappy If we pitched somewhere with no tv or phone signal.

Braemar site has been taken back by the estate. Still very good facilities and an easy walk into the village. Make sure you try the Fife Arms Hotel ..... definately different in the bar, but good food and atmosphere. The site closes for November, then re-opens for the rest of the season.
Granton on Spey site is also excellent, with an easy flat walk into the village. Just watch the pricing for Xmas and New Year period !!

Yes after the advice of others on this thread I’ve now booked 4 nights in Grantown on Spey , 3 nights in Braemar and 2 nights in Edinburgh. 3 days travel up and back from Devon with overnight stopovers wherever we feel like.
Not quite Austria but really looking forward to it.

HI WillH, Is that the place where the owner has a very good line in 'tounge in cheek' insulting repartee?

Aye, he's a bit of a 'Jack the Lad'! The pies however, cooked fresh, are the best I have ever had, anywhere. Beer was pretty good as well.
