If I were you, and given it's age, I'd be getting it fixed under warranty.
If it's like ours it's just a matter of sticking the "T" end of the winder into the slot at the end of the awning and cranking one way to open and the other to close.
The only isue we had was "how the he** does the winder come back out of the slot" until we discovered it's push it up a bit and turn!
