Last Thursday we booked 4 nights at the CMC Baltic Wharf Site at Bristol, from Monday 12 AM onwards to Friday 12AM, even though the website computer said NO, I called and got a pitch with no awning no problem...so nice one.
I phoned the this Saturday Morning to postpone to say I had a problem with the van on the 12 volt side, and could not get it sorted until Monday at the earliest.
This is the response I got:
So are asking to cancel your pitch?
I said yes.
He said, well as its only 46 hours until your scheduled arrival time, I will have to put you on the system as a no show, but I will mark it up as a breakdown situation.
He then said: The CMC will let you know whether there will be a late cancellation fee to be paid, and they will write to you accordingly:eek:

I wouldn't mind except that I have been a member for 4 years and only used CMC sites twice, I do not go on line early Jan at 8AM and book up everywhere "I Think" I might want to go to for the year, as this would be selfish & unfair to others that actually may want to go to a popular site at that time.
I have never cancelled a booking before, or turned up late.

If they try and fine me,for only giving 46 hours and not 48 hours notice, they can stick it where the sun dont shine.

I believe it should be 72 hours notice.
Think its just a scare tactic.

Thanks @Theonlysue ,72 hours and not 48 notice:eek: I wish I could be given 72 hours notice that my van would break down, might give me a better chance with getting Fiat assistance to turn up.:D(y)

You'd have thought that as it was unexpected AND beyond your control that they would have cut you some slack.

I had to cancel a C&MC booking on day of arrival last year as a result of weather (snow). As Big Map says no cancellation fee charged. Didn't even get a letter.

ps the block booking scenario has been significantly reduced as there is no "booking opening day" as it's now on a rolling basis 12 months in advance.

I would expect the first cancellation, with less than 72 hours notice to be ignored, and the second in that year, to probably get a warning letter or call. No fines that I have heard of

We had to cancel a weeks holiday while we were on site at Bristol Wharf 2 years ago. Could only give one days notice due to having to go home to deal with an ongoing legal problem. We explained and the site manager said we might hear from head office but we never did (no mention of cancellation fee)

They will just flag you as a no show, if you do it again at short notice then there may some type of repercussion, they flag no shows as a way to stop members booking numerous sites for the same dates and then cancelling the ones they don't fancy attending at short notice.
However have you noticed how many sites have pitches avaliable for only either a Friday or Saturday but not both nights

Zu did not follow ze orders
Zerfore zu must be punished
Zu will be tied to ze white peg and zu will be flogged.
Zer is no excuse for zis behaviour

You will just get an email asking you not to do it again.

Btw it’s not possible to block book various sites for the same date - the computer definitely says ‘no’ to that!

I think its quite reasonable to charge a cancellation fee if the site is fully booked as its stopped someone else using the pitch if theres loads of space then its unfair. I know its not your fault you broke down but if they let off everyone who breaks down guess what there will be a sudden increase in "breakdowns" and a reduction in cancellations for people who just change their mind. If it seems unfair try missing a flight and saying you want to not pay as you broke down on the way to the airport!

Why should there be a 'cancellation fee'? They still have the money for the booking & additionally they can resell it to anyone stopping & enquiring.

That's life I guess! Some members of a club abuse the service provided and it ends up with the innocent being penalised as a result.
Bit like being a Freer Looading Tossser on Motorhome Fun. :D:D

You will probably just get an email reminding you about the proper notice period.
It is a busy site and when I was there last week I spoke to someone who told me that got three nights by just ringing up when the online booking said it was fully booked.
So i will ring when I want to stay again and online says it’s full.
Now if it was the CCC you would have lost your deposit.

We've got in there and other busy sites by phoning even when online it says they're full. Worth giving it a go.

There is an issue that you can book a year in advance with no deposit. i was at the Baltic Wharf Site over the New Year 2 years ago and people were boasting that they have just re booked for next year's New Year when they had no idea if they were intending to go or not. To get in we were something like 32nd on the list and still managed to get in!

AFAIK with the CAMC there's no advance payment, so they can't withhold any money as a fine.
It's standard practice in the hotel industry to charge one night's room cost in the event of a no-show.

I've just read through this thread and now am more convinced than ever that I should NOT belong to such a business (sorry they claim to be clubs).

We've just spent two great nights away, one at Deer Leap (51.240409, -2.690225) and one at Hay Bluff (52.029285, -3.109613), no booking, no charge, few neighbours and fantastic scenery. The only downside was the military exercise during the night at Hay Bluff!

Neither location places that you would expect to enjoy in late February but this year is an exception.

I was told by another member that they put markers on your account and eventually remove your membership or don’t let you renew!

I have had a similar situation but had an online booking. So, what I did was. re-schedule out by 3 months, no issue with that, then cancelled, no snooty responses (y)

no worries here, it only becomes an issue if you do it 3 times in a calendar year, I had a family issue that stopped me going away once last year and had to cancel 24 hours before we were due to go, just got a standard Email reminding us that if we do two more times before the end of the year they might suspend our membership for a couple of weeks

TBH - I don't think there's a problem with the policy but perhaps the Baltic Wharf operative could have expressed it in a more positive way...

We cancelled one site booking due to the snow (Beast from the East). C&MC accepted the excuse and flagged it. No cancellation costs to us.

We haven't had to cancel since then and reckon the current system of booking online with no deposit + pay on arrival is pretty good.
