MH
Looking to buy soon
Exp
I’m a newbie
I’m looking for a sub 7m MH with a good payload like a Hymer Exsis which is well insulated what other brands are there?

Well I know Carthago do, have looked at them in the past, same decor and quality as the A Class as far as I could see. You can download their brochure and Go European have some on their site, sure some are at sale prices too!

One option might be Carthago C Tourer - some of the floor plans are just under 7m, all have double floors and are well insulated. Whether the floor plans match what you want is another matter. The header suggests you want a semi-integrated motorhome - as far as I know, all Hymer Exsis models sold in UK are fully-integrated (A class) models.

Maybe worth looking at Frankia models too?

Dethleffs.

In fact, pretty much any German brand.

Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions, I’m looking to buy used, and not being a Brit I can’t drive over 3500 kgs, só looking for a decent payload and my wife can’t stand being cold.

Hymer Exsis has a single floor the only Semi-integrated Hymer with a double floor is the Tramp SL which might be a bit tight on payload for running at 3500 kg..
On Carthago's more than a few years old the Fiat chassis was standard and the Al-Ko an option you only get the double floor on the Al-Ko. Carthago will also be tight at 3500 kg.

What about the Modern Comfort line?

All semi-integrated Carthagos have an insulated, heated double floor, including the Malibu-branded ones. Which is part of their weight issues.

You don't need a double floor to be warm! The EXSIS-T models are very well insulated and will easily keep you warm. Your main problem will be the front cabin, not the floor, but there are solutions for that.

The double floor's main avantages are:
  • the floor itself doesn't get cold to touch when exterior temperatures go deep freezing (lower than -10°C)
  • in the deep double floors, it is easy to lodge the water tanks to make sure they don't freeze
  • they provide extra storage
Very nice, but hardly indispensable.

Sorry for asking for information Tony
I wasn't being facetious. Truth is most manufacturers have something in their range with generally Continental built being better winterised. If you can narrow it down a little (list more of your preferences) there's a lot of help on here. Your initial post will simply elicit a long list of manufacturers. I'm sorry I didn't notice your location. :blusher:

My wife doesn't like the cold either. That was one of the reasons why we changed to an integrated A class Hymer. The front lounge is much better insulated than our previous semi integrated C class and with no drafts. And the heating system runs through the cab area, unlike the C class models.

And I would also recommend getting the Alde heating system rather than Truma, as it gives a much cosier feeling.

0P said he was looking at buying used probably too new.

As I said Carthago's if more than a few years old only a double floor on Al-Ko versions.
Malibu is only a partial double floor as it's on a Fiat chassis.

I agree:-) On the Exsis most of the floor that you can touch is effectively a double floor. The center of the chassis holds the water tanks in a heated insulated tray and the front living area has a raised platform creating a second floor. the only single skin part runs under the cupboards and bathroom floor, both of which are also heated. You do lose the extra storage of a true second floor, but you do save weight and overall van height (useful on french toll roads).
Btw. We’ve run ours in temps of -25c and it easily stays toasty warm using only the 1800w electric heating on the Truma 6E:-)

We’ve had single floor vans that have been warm, most important is a good heater with plenty of outlets to warm the whole van up.
Our Burstner has a double floor (Thermofloor) where all the heating pipes ( and other stuff) runs and always feels warm on your bare feet. It has 13 heater outlets ( 2 in the garage) and 2 heated underfloor compartments.
It’s toasty.
You should be able to buy an older one with the “Thermofloor”

Thanks to everyone so much information, With a Aussie driver’s license we can only drive up to 3500 kgs and can’t get a C1, also insurance max’s out at £ 55,000 and is hard to get and very expensive being non residents
We arrive March 4 and need to buy a MH with as much information as possible
Thanks all.

If I were you, I'd rank my criteria as follow:
  1. Condition of the vehicle
  2. Payload
  3. Layout
  4. Build and isolation
You'll see that matching your requirements on all these these will already leave you with a very short list of candidates. Adding a double floor to your weight and budget constraints does not seem the wisest approach to me. I'd consider it as a nice to have.

I assume you mean the Compactline ones on the super-lightweight chassis? That's what we have now but it will be well out of his budget and to be perfectly honest he will struggle at 3500kg.

I suspect ANY double floor ones will have a very limited payload anyway at 3500kg max and the payload available on the rear axle could be very, very tight even with a semi-integrated (as opposed to a fully-integrated A-Class).

Ah, with you mentioning Carthago I thought that's what it was about ... of course I could be a bit biased! :giggle:

We had a 2012 Knaus Sun TI. There is also a Sky model. It had an excellent double floor with loads of storage space. It won motorhome of the year that year. Available in 6.5 metres. An excellent van. Also look at the Rapido vehicles. I think any models with DF at the end mean 'Double Floor'.

Maybe some people are still interested, which is myself included. The advantages of a second floor ar such that i really do not want to have to travel with clutter in the habitation area. eg chairs, tables etc. All my clutter is currently stowed out of sight but easily accessible when needed unlike most which i have seen. Only large garage motorhome come near but they have to be longer where mine at just under 6 meter fits my drive easily and is much easier to find parking spaces on my travels
