Hi

I'm looking for advice on which motorhome specific satnav people would recommend? I've had bad experiences with CoPilot (it dropped us on the M5 underneath the road we wanted to be on and then tried to take us home on the M4 even though all signs said it was closed).

Aguri and Avtex seem to be the ones that do most of the marketing but genuine users will know best if they are any good. We currently use a standard TomTom but are wondering if its worth paying to have the dimensions in a specific one and have sites etc available too.

Thanks, Mike

I also have an iPad Pro but running the gps that the OP had a problem with..

Sygic or waze are often recommended. The trouble is none are without the ability to let you down.
I find google maps as good as any, but it either needs access to data or have the map downloaded to your device.
With data it will re-route to avoid heavy traffic or road closures.
Did your copilot have data ?
But as said, none are perfect

Tom Tom 6000 Truck sat nav excellent piece of kit never let us down, it has life time maps, you can put in weight, length and width.
mine will be up for sale, as i have just had new Alpine all in one fitted (again with Tom Tom maps)
PM me if interested Saxon66

Hi

Yes, the CoPilot had the full package. What was most annoying is that we'd just paid to upgrade it on their annual subscription. Up until that point, it hadn't let us down!

It's a shame that Google have travelled all the roads that you're likely to take a motorhome along
and, during that time, gathered all sorts of unmentionable data
but, somehow, failed to not the things relevant to travel along such roads
such as speed calming measures, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, size and weight restrictions, pubs and other-such landmarks.
As far as navigational aids are concerned, it was a missed opportunity.

Apple maps seem quite good - they know about traffic lights - or some of them.
Putting in dimensions is just a placebo.
When I had a 3.5m high vehicle, I had to re-route a few times to avoid obstacles in spite of specifying dimensions in the SatNav.
My vehicles all use CarPlay and AndriodAuto but, if I was going to buy stand-alone unit, I'd take a good look at Garmin.
Anyone who hasn't been poorly routed by their SatNav probably hasn't tested them to their limit. Most of my problems have arisen at the end of a journey, going 'off-piste' to find a site, or due to a diversion or wrong turn. So long as you avoid 'shortest or scenic route', you should be guided along a suitable road.

Do you mean iPad Pro with google maps?

Thanks. Is there a specific App you use or just Google maps?
I just use the apple map already installed. It’s fab and very detailed on the new iPad, sits nicely on the dash, is loud enough and easy to use and follow. Been using it for over 10 years now. Also notifies speed cameras.

Few screen shots.

Navpal for me. Took me through France, Spain & the Canarys with no problems. Oh & home.

I use CMNAV from a UK based company. They have a variety of models including some with live traffic and without and also dash cam built-in. I was a bit suspicious at the beginning due to their low price compared to Garmin or TomTom but the sat nav is excellent at least for me. No issues whatsoever, and the after sales is excellent.
