Get an Apple machine, i’ve had them for 15 years, Imac, Macbook, ipad pro, ipad and never had any reason to use antivirus software
The previous 20 years on Windows used to be a nightmare
Sorry, but there's plenty of exploits for MacOS now. On the black market, zero day exploits are just as cheap as for Windows. Apple patches issues all the time. You are not immune. In the meantime, Windows has got significantly better. No, it's still not as secure as Linux or MacOS, but a lot of that it because it's a bigger target.

Yes, true, Windows used to be a nightmare and is more prone for a number of reasons. But the apple world is far from immune to viruses, security flaws etc. So don't assume they are invulnerable - far from it. (And still susceptible to all the other security issues of phishing, fake logins etc etc)

The other thing to consider... I've not had a virus for about 15 years. My current virus scanner could be doing absolutely nothing, I'd never know.
Trojans sit there undetected. You'll not know they are there or what they are doing.

Hmm. All the AV companies have products for Apple products.
The virus writers know how complacent the users are.

My McAfee subscription has expired. Is there a good free anti-virus programme or should I just re-subscribe to McAfee?
Buy a Mac haven’t had to buy antivirus for years.

Relative newbie
I moved from AVG which I've had for years in free and paid-for formats, did a good job and not a lot wrong with it. I am now running Bitdefender for a change as it's a decent product now and the pricing was good for my needs. I've had Malwarebytes (free with certain NatWest accounts) in the past too. I've yet to take a good look at Microsoft Defender...

I use Revo Uninstaller to completely remove old or trial AV products.

You can scan the Mac for virus and trojans you do not need AV of course all the AV companies do have products for Mac it’s key to their revenue stream.

How do you scan for viruses without an AV product?

But you need a proper AV product to scan it ;)

Viruses are invisible otherwise
I use bit defender and just scan the Mac or IPhone it checks to see if there is any malware

Not used anything other than MS Defender for years and never had a problem.

Be conscious of what you are downloading and where from.

Would you bet your life that your machine is 100% safe ?
I wouldn't value my laptop the same as my life, so no, not even close.
For the half-hour it'd take me to re-image it I would say its at least as safe as that.

Up there you said you never use one.
It’s not really required as I have never had any malware and would never just use an AV

And I agree I did say I do not use one

Naivety does not make you safe ;)
Absolutely that’s why the devices are regularly updated and scanned, never had any malware but of courage the only fully protected computer is one never connected to the internet

Thanks for your views, now can anyone tell me how to get rid of the irritating reminder from McAfee telling me that there is a critical virus situation and I should renew my subscription with them - please?

I buy McAfee on Ebay. Much cheaper.
