we are ‘doing ‘ the Romantic Route’ June and early July. We would like to stop for 5 days somewhere on the route to do some challenging walks and cycling.
Any suggestions as to the best part of the Route to do this?

This will give you some info
https://www.autoeurope.com/road-trip-planner/germany/romantic-road/
Rothenburg is a good central location to see a lot of little towns

https://www.rothenburg.de/tourismus/tourismus-service/anreise/fahren-und-parken/

The challenging part would be down the bottom end in the foothills of the Alps .
Have stayed a couple of times at this site http://www.camping-brunnen.de/
very nice and helpful people Fussen :)

If you are starting up in the north at Wurtzberg, visit a tourist info “I” office as they will have free brochures of all the route and some suggested campsites and Stellplatz.

We done it a few years back and thoroughly enjoyed it .

The official start of the Romantic Road is Wurzburg, but the logical start is Wertheim-am-Main as the northern part of the road follows the River Tauber. Wertheim is where the Tauber joins the Main. There is a stellplatz at Wertheim over looking the Main so you can watch the boats go by. Its under a viacuct but surprisingly isn't noisy. The entrance to thr stellplatz is through the car park at 49.75981, 9.51450

When we did the route 3 years ago we stayed at the campsite at Rothenburg (there are 2 close by, both good) with a lovely hotel next door for food and drinks. We thought it nicer than the stellplatz which was part of the car park, really convenient for town though.

In Fussen we stayed at the large stellplatz, had showers toilets and small restaurant, really convenient for cycling into town or down to the lake etc.

Hope you have a great trip.

Most seem to travel along the Moselle and the Rhine, few seem to travel along the Neckar, all very nice in September

Doing challenging walks and cycle rides doesn't sound at all romantic to me
Give it a try....you never know what effect it will have on you!
After all, as in a challenge, doesn’t romance get the heart beating, the blood stirring and the juices rising?

Then there is a town with a statue with pustules in the middle of a roundabout, another with sun dials and another with plastic pigs outside lots of shops

Garmisch-Partenkirchen although not strictly on the route is an absolutely wonderful Centre for walking. There is one particular famous gorge walk out of town that takes you up in to the foothills of the Alpes. Easy well surfaced walking, sorry can't remember the name of it but just ask it's famous.

Rothenberg ODT is a wonderfully magical place BUT stay in the stellplaz and go into town at dusk after the coach trip hordes have left.

Partnachklamm perhaps? Agree with everything else written, especially as regards Rothenburg.

Thanks, that's it. Stellplaz is across town by the sky lift up Wank mountain. Not cheap but you get a wad of vouchers, including one for free bus journeys for the days you stay and one for the hot water spa pool. We drove across town and had no trouble parking at the leisure centre and ski jump stadium (site of Hitler's winter Olympics) with an 8mtr van. less than 10min walk then to start of the gorge walk.

When we were in Rothenburg, we used one of the campsites there called Tauber Romantik. Its only a short walk out of the town, and somehow felt better than the stellplatz.

If memory serves, there are a couple of vinyards along the Romantic Road that have stellplatz.

As part of this years longer trip, (mid July) we will be in the area again, this time on the Austrian side of Zugspitze mountain. In fact, we reserved space there only yesterday. After that, its up through Germany into Denmark and Sweden.

Quite. Although I'd be happy to walk a few hundred yards arm in arm to a boutique mountain restaurant with a string quartet, lobster and a bottle of Muscadet (oh, and to start with, half a dozen oysters (y) ).

I though Rothenburg was lovely - stayed at Tauber Romantik which was a great little campsite. There's a very nice beer garden 10 mins walk along the river https://www.google.de/maps/place/Gaststätte+Unter+den+Linden/@49.3815797,10.1707733,164m/

Füssen is on our list for later this year as we didn't make it last year - am torn whether to go for the pretty campsite by the lake which is further from town or the stellplatz which is closer by. Will be a 2 or 3 night stay, pros and cons of each?

The stellplatz is a large commercial one, “pitches” are separated by low wooden fences. There is a small restaurant, a bakery just outside and a supermarket and drink warehouse in easy walk. It is big, busy with lots of international visitors, we really liked it!! There is also a smaller one on the same road, we didn’t look around it though. Easy walk or cycle to town and reasonable cycle to the boats or the cycle paths. Has its own web site.

If it’s the campsite I’m thinking about, overlooking the lake? Lots of semi permanent caravans, v steep hills and access, really good Italian restaurant attached.

So, if you want a few quiet days relaxing, the site, if you want to be near town and restaurants then the stellplatz.

Hope helpful.

Thanks Bill - yes that helps a lot :) There are a couple of lake-side campsites in the area - we were looking at Camping Brunnen. I think if I could guarantee a lakeside pitch I'd probably go for the campsite, but looking at the pictures on their website it doesn't look like they have many left for tourers so the chances are probably low. Good to hear that the Stellplatz is nice though - plus its half the price of the campsite (y) Think we'll play it by ear and see how we feel when we get there....probably the previous two nights will have been quiet and relaxing away from a town so we're probably going to be in the mood for something a bit more lively by that point :D
