Hi

My recent Habitation Service revealed a small area with higher % readings than the rest in the inside high wall cupboard where the roof slope comes down that needed addressing, to prevent damage later on.

The engineer said to take the rubber out, clean it up, take the screws out and re-seal the screws, then cover the screw heads with the same.

I’m not sure if the rail is referred to as a “C” rail but I know when you pop it out in that area, there are a cluster of three screws when I looked. It appeared that whatever had been used was crumbly, and I probably need to dig this out (somehow?), and push new sealant in and then cover the screw heads.

Is there some special sealant from a caravan dealer or maybe Screwfix that I should use in preference to a general household sealant? The arrow on the picture shows the spot.

Many thanks

Sika-flex is the best stuff to use. All caravan and motorhome dealers use it.
Available most places

The rail needs removing and re-sealing with non setting mastic. If you use SikaFlex you will never be able to get it off again if you have to. Its built the same way as a caravan. The Aluminum strip covers the edges of the Aluminum sheeting they use. If its powdery then the sealer has dried out. Its probably dried out all the way along and just needs removing carefully. The whole area cleaning and putting back together. You can get the non setting mastic on a tape that makes life a little easier.

As above, also CT1 from builders merchants, screwfix etc. Same stuff as Sikaflex really. If it's only for the screws.

to be done correctly, you need to remove the rail, clean off the old mastic and refit with new mastic and stainless steel screws

I thought (perhaps naively) that it was an awning rail as he said just take the screws out and re-seal.

I never thought for one minute that the rail is actually sealing two sheets.

Is it easy to peal away from the side of the MH?

Have a look from 4:30 onwards it will give you an idea of how they put them together. This is the old way of doing it. You do need a few skills to do it properly.
