Having read a few threads on here recently about water pump problems (post winter blues mainly),I started to wonder if I should buy a spare pump.
Then I thought there may be other parts,e.g.fuel pump.....they seem to go pop quite often.
But what else?????
Van is 56 plate Ducato X244 2.8. Rapido 786F
My technical ability rating is probably only 5 out of 10,but that may be enough to get out of trouble, and I could always find a fitter so not have to wait for a spare part to arrive in the middle of nowhere.
Thanks.:D

I have a small locker full of habitation spares, ie, 2 x new Reich taps, spare Reich water pump, window levers, plastic washers, rubber "O" rings, brackets, screws, bulbs, marker light lens, fuses of all shapes and sizes, Thetford toilet spares, Electrolux AES fridge/freezer gas spares, etc, etc. (y)

In the rear garage, I carry engine oil, sealants, a mastic gun, spare drive belts, (including a camshaft timing belt), and an assortment of cable ties, including reusable ones, and stainless steel ones for the exhaust, (should it need supporting at the roadside). I (now) also carry a 3 - 6 tonne nylon strop, and 2 x 3.25T shackles, since needing to be pulled off at Stratford three years ago. There might be a set of jump leads in there too, but I think that's about it. :)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Well I will kick it off

Apart from fuses and spare bulbs, which you probably have.

Then I would suggest -

A spare wheel or at least a matching tyre - some continental fitters will only fit a matching pair if they cannot source one to match existing.

Spare wiper blades of correct length - often more expensive on the Continent, even if easily available.

Gas Regulator, especially some of the newer 30Mb ones. I have old 37Mb so do not worry so much.

Selection of Jubilee Clips for quick pipe leak repairs.

Gaffer tape

Length (5m?) of 1/2" hose

Spare sink/basin plug(s).

(Multimeter if you do not have one)

The above list would not cost much(except wheel/tyre) but solve some easy problems, keep you self-sufficient and on your way.

There will be others with more ideas

Cor blimey, that’s quite a list. I think if I have a problem I’ll just get you to come and do the job! (y);)

Thanks folks. Well Ive got some of those, but hadn’t thought about spare gas regulator or wiper blades. Doesn’t rain sur le continent does it..

Just a second case of beer (y)

You don't really want to know what I carry except that with tools it comes to around 165kgs. A complete clutch kit is in there
If I had a garage I would actually carry a spare gearbox:)

the usual bulbs, assorted fuses, cable ties, tape, bolts and screws plus a spare water pump and a fuel filter with housing. I did have an alternator belt but that was used to bail somebody else out of trouble
plus a breakdown membership card and a credit card

Ah,yes. I meant to say fuel filter, not fuel pump. And I recall reading on here about getting the housing as well.
Thanks.

Spare wing mirror glass, other than that just fuses, tape, glue etc. Wouldn't know what to do with a lot of stuff thats been mentioned :Eeek:

Water pump, Fuses, spare bulbs, engine oil, duct tape and WD40 is about my limit.
I notice a few folk take engine oil. I might add that to my list, although the old 2.8 doesn’t seem to use any between services, which is good. Our journey in June will be about 3000 miles so guess I will. Thanks.

I carry a decent hab toolkit. I carry only spares that would stop comfortable use of the hab. area and spoil my holiday. These are basically a water pump, a gas regulator, a few lengths of wire, clips, duct tape, plastic tape, silicon & WD40 sprays. I don't carry base vehicle spares other than a spare wheel & the means of installing it. If like me your holidays are within sight of civilisation most stuff can be obtained nearby & we have the car with us for hunting them down.

Are all gas regulators the same ? or is there some id on them to source a spare ?
No. there are differences in the quantity they can pass so you really need the info off the existing one to get the correct one for your van.

I replaced my water pump (shurflo) as it was noisy. I now carry the old one as a spare. Gas regulator is a good idea, mine has been recently replaced

Sadly i carry new starter motor, alternater, Large rubber turbo pipe.(long story)2x rear calipers and pads .
Leftr and right front calipers. Water pump and timing belt. All bought from ebay and genuine renault at a very fair price.
I will add wiper blades now to my list. I am fortunate to have the payload.
I have been away and had to pay a garage the full price for an alternater and fitting it ruined our holiday as money was tight. i said i would avoid what i could in the future so have the spares

Don't forget a spare cap for the Thetford cassette - it's rather depressing watching yours disappear into a sewer! And I have a habit of leaving water inlet caps on walls. Another item I have had problems with in the past is the Hoselock connector, which would normally be attached to a water tap.
