What mobile data system do you use?

OMG ?. I was inspired by a forum member to go mobile data instead of antiquated satellite and aerials, you know the things you have to drill holes in your van to fit, you can see them in most museums old tech display rooms. Well I did a test today, I am using 3 mobile, I have an Apple XSMax that is meant to be state of the art, well it was until thy launched a new state of the art one last week, anyway I did a speed test on my phone as it was, then linked it to the dongle thing I bought that also has a 3 SIM in and this was the result, I can attach 32 devices to the dongle thing and it has 40GB a month, as I don’t watch TV it will be used mainly on this forum, I can get more GB if getting short they said

This is phone result which is the lower one and dongle result higher, I don’t know what it means but apparently higher is better, so in future will dongle my phone to allow quicker posting ?

SO WHAT DO YOU DO or are you still into screwing in your van?

I use a huawei 5577c mifi with a puck mimo aerial on the roof. speeds often compatible to home broadbad on three. backed up with unlimited data on my samsung galaxy s10plus through vodafone

I simply tether to the phone. 30gb a month data works for me. Includes the Netflix stick for TV. Works well for iPad etc etc as well

I can do that but the dongle thing for whatever reason seems so much faster. The only downside to the dongle I got is you can’t attach an aerial, but with the speeds it gets maybe don’t need one. Will test it more and report back, think 5577 takes an aerial but much slower download and upload speeds half of the one I bought I think.

We use two sources for data.
1. Use our phones as we have 80 gigs on Vodafone which we can tether to other devices. Use our fire stick plugged into the TV which works well. We have watched Motogp, F1 and other sports events and still had data left at the end of the month so works for us.
2. If nearby wifi is available we use the Iboost.
We have satellite as well but rarely use it nowadays.
This basically is on wet days as watching TV is a last resort.

Anyone know the difference between fire sticks and chrome cast, now I have the connection I need to buy something to connect to, will be for grandkids, we have amazon videos and are total Apple users so no android. Thanks

I see my dongle has an Ethernet connection point so will buy an extender box and can get my Hue lights connected as I have some spare bridges ?. It’s also going to give me live view from my Blackview dashcam, maybe even fit in CCTV for security, simple witless cameras like the Amazon Blink are fantastic ?

I did look at that with an aerial combination, mine can’t take an aerial, as you say the issue is power, in the end I went for the 5885 as it has an internal battery bank, runs for a full day AND you can charge your phone from it, I think as I only use the van once a year for me the 5885 was the correct decision ?. I can always change and give it to one of the grandkids if no good ?

I use Vodaphone 40Gb a month phone tethering. I am currently at El Berro and getting download speed of 40Mbs. There is free site wifi here but only about a quarter of the speed.
Those who know this place will be aware its about as rural as you can get.

Yes you can have fun with Wi-Fi but I don’t think some people realise what you can now do instead of screwing, this is a more cleaner, as in aesthetics and wiring way of doing things than worrying where your next hole will be, my aim is to have as few holes in my van as I can, they have a bad reputation as it is ?

We have a sat dish glued to the van roof. It picks up tv signals in places where there is no data coverage. Likewise we use a dedicated satnav for the same reason
We use a Free sim in a Mifi to give us internet access at home in France and Smartdnsproxy to enable us to watch UK and if necessary, USA tv while in France.
We use 3 sims in our smartphones when in the UK.

I just use my phone and can tether iPad and laptop to it. Don’t watch tv at home so certainly don’t when away.
I have 20 gig and have not needed any more.

I have unlimited data on 3 but don't know if tethering is limited will check it out, just wondering if you use speed test, would be interested to know if the tethering speed is the same as your phone, I know when abroad they reduce the speed of the connection when roaming on 3 mobile, something to do with the agreement with the other countries they have agreement with.

For goodness sake, I have just checked and found that perhaps I didn't need the dongle, I have unlimited data on my phone plan and iPad SIM so can tether unlimited to other devices! What the hell! So glad I joined this forum as I would never have known, I have just paid for another 40gb month SIM for the dongle, anyway thanks for the replies

Just to put it into perspective, I have 4gb per month and, when I am away, I only use it for surfing the internet (rather than watching tv/videos).

I use less than 1.5gb of my allowance.

Hi, I don't know if the speed is the same as on my phone as I don't know how to test this. I don't seem to notice any difference in speed when using tethered items either ipad or laptop.

100G on Vodaphone, no limits, tethering allowed. £20 per month, shame they have stopped that deal now. When away, particularly down in Spain we watch films and use about 65G per month ishhhhhhh.

firestick comes in 2 flavours, the standard firestick that is great in the motorhome to stream films, programmes, video and catchup tv direct to your tv on the hdmi port. i stick with 720p for fast buffer free streaming via the phone or mifi. mine is jailbroken with extra apps giving access to even the latest content and pay per view sports etc

the firestick 4k is a little larger but does the same as the basic firestick but in super fast 4k video. this makes it unsuited to 4g streaming due to buffering unless you reduce video quality back to 720p

chromecast is a casting device that you transmit the video from your phone, tablet or ipad etc. it is not a streaming device with apps on, just casts to the screen
