I've just had a conversation with Comfort Insurance. They told me that the underwriters had queried the high mileage. I had told them we expect to do around 15,000 miles per annum - which, according to Comfort, is seen as high. I based this on having done nearly 4,000 miles in September.

Surely this isn't high mileage???.... is it?

Clocked up 4800 last year and expect to top out this year at around 5200
IMHO 15000 per year sounds high for a motorhome
Wish we could do that amount though

Not unheard of but unfortunately consider high for a leisure vehicle by the industry (Sales & Insurance)!

My wife and I work full time but managed a respectable 7,000 in our first 12 months of ownership and hope to do the same again. Rest assured, if we weren't working it would be double that(y)

Depends what you intend to do. We put 8000 estimate on ours thinking we would need to up if we did a long trip. Done just 11000 in 18 months. Used it quite a bit but only in GB

On 3rd van so not a total newbie....
We have only had ours 3 1/2 months but have done 4000 miles, because we both work, it is mainly weekends, so tends to be 200-250 each weekend + 1 week in france. We expect to do 8-10,000 miles.

Over the 8 years we've owned it, our van has averaged just over 10,000 per year but that is slowly creeping up - we did 12,000 last year. We bought our van to use it!

After getting a bit close a bit too often we eventually asked Comfort for "unlimited" mileage which was no problem, albeit at an increased premium. The policy actually states 25,000 but the lady at Comfort told me they recognise that as unlimited - but it's enough for me.

Yes it is a high mileage for a motorhome and ultimately reflects in the resale value - as we discovered when we were considering a change a few months ago.

Eight Years and 28,000 Miles.
Bought our Inca in March, started using it in April, estimated about 3000 miles per annum (first timers), had to extend that to 6000, so far have done about 5000..

I think the majority of MHs only do about 2,000 miles a year, if that. Your figure is a lot higher than the average, that's all the insurers are saying but if you think you are going to do that distance, then 'fess up and pay the premium. :)

Good job the UK insurers are not dealing with EU motorhomers as their mileage average is far above what is considered average here, when I lived there my average was in the region of 12,000, dealers and insurers did not appear concerned with this :D

Many years ago 35,000kms/year was told to me by my agent as the average car mileage.
I appear to be averaging 3k/month at the moment . but at present I am using it all the time.

We have averaged about 9k pa for the last few years. Our pvc is our only vehicle, since we live close to shops and town centre etc, and cannot justify a second vehicle. The last year we had a car, we only did 900 miles. However we always go abroad for up to 3 months a year, having a son and his family in the south of France, so of course tend to do more miles than most. We have just renewed the van insurance, and tried to get a quote for say 12k per year just to be safe, and that nearly doubled the quotes we were getting. To me, this is strange, because the van is still insured while on the drive, cars do not normally have a mileage limit and usually do many more miles pa. The maximum no claims section surely is the salient point here. Plus they know it is our only vehicle.

No need to 'fess up' I've cancelled with Comfort and will take the policy quoted with NFU - they didn't bat an eyelid at the mileage, cost of motorhome or not having a tracker.

:D

I certainly wished I had contacted NFU for a quote. Do they do a motorhome specific policy?

Yes they do. I was given their number by the dealership where we are purchasing our motorhome. They are really helpful and there were a lot of plus points such as free courtesy car, unlimited windscreen cover and discount on renewal with them. The cost was much lower than I anticipated too. The only thing they didn't have was breakdown cover but that isn't an issue for us. They also replace new for old on vehicles up to 2 years old.

Can't quite match @Robert Clark though we are trying hard.
33k miles in 32 months.
It's a nice looking van but we didn't spend all the dosh to look at it sitting on the drive. :)

Richard.

That's exactly it. We want to enjoy our motorhome and spend as much time travelling as we possibly can. The woman at Comfort thought this was a strange concept.

About 5000 over five weeks pa. Some just have too much leisure.
From an underwriting view, I'd argue that higher mileages should not be a much higher risk because the drivers will be more accustomed to their vehicles and foreign traffic. Low mileage premiums should go up because, although not at risk for so long, they will be less familiar with the vehicle on the occasions that they do venture out.

Used to have unlimited, however, was only averaging 10k a year and comfort dropped the premium on their suggestion, was happy to take it up as only a phone call if I shoot past it.

8k to 9k for us but I expect it to go up over the next few years.
Comfort have 2k bands up to 10k above that it's unlimited. From memory with Comfort if you go over your stated mileage and have a prang your excess goes up, over 1000 miles over stated excess increased to £1000, under a 1000 maybe over 500 excess is £500.
