Could one of you knowledgeable lads or lasses please tell me what this is and its function? Does it need maintenance?

Could I gues that it is an expansion tank to maintain water pump pressure. If I'm right can I claim a biscuit?

Looks like a Whale surge damper so expansion tank would be close enough for the biscuit

It's an anti gassing, left hand threaded Foo Foo valve

Other than that, I can't help you as Mrs Emmit is not allergic to gassing.
Therefore, we haven't got one.

Surge damper, It's to stop the water pump from switching on and off like mad like ours does because it's a cheapo whale one and it keeps filling up with water.
