Out for an afternoon walk down by the river Tweed and came across this absolutely immaculate VW split screen camper, bodywork immaculate, fully redone inside, full leather, beautiful woodwork, had a stainless steel twin exhaust so assume new engine etc? Great number plate, anyone know who owns it, a member here? Looks like a great pension pot investment!!

Lovely van. It's these VW's that got me interested in the idea of travelling in a camper van. Never got one and to be honest I'm glad I didn't but they are cracking vans just not suitable for me.

Are they still produced in Brazil and other countries?

Danbury in Yate were importing them and converting, but I think that imports have recently dried up

Steve, what do you think it would be valued at? Hear stories of these going for over £100k??!!

i guess that would depend on how Original it is as well as the condition. but £30K - £50k seems a going rate..

Just found this too

Ex g/fs sister imported hers from Germany and as she was in South Africa asked us to store and use it.
Cornwall, via the Welsh coast, from Scarborough.
Cost a bloody fortune in fuel and I'm sure the steering wheel was just for show... Wandered all over the road.... Often two lanes at motorway speeds.
Biggest load of crap I've ever driven.

That’s the very van! Same registration number, £100k spent on renovation and sold for £42k, a bargain!! Now, wonder who bought it and what they are doing in Melrose.

they dont build them like they use-too

thank goodness. nice to own and to show off but practical in todays condition.... not.

I read an advert somewhere about a company that buys old VW campers, refurbishes them then fit them with a modern engine and gearbox from I can’t quite remember but maybe a Kia or a Vauxhall. Then they hire them out to wanna be surfer dudes who don’t want to spend half their holidays waiting on the side of the road for a breakdown service.

Think that Jamie Oliver Dub van has a Porsche lump in it.
Someone will be along very shortly to tell me i'm wrong.

I learnt to drive in a 1966 split screen, aged 17, they weren’t quite so cool then, the brakes were dreadful and the gears were interesting to negotiate 😂😂😂, I wish my dad had kept it, I think he wishes he’d kept it too.

A guy I know has a Subaru engine in his....

It sounds cool doesn't it - my honeymoon around California in a VW camper lent to me by a friend who lives there. The reality was a tour of the garages of the Golden State, a fuel bill that was eye watering (even at US prices), a nail shredding driving experience and a broadening of my lexicon of blaphemies. Oh, and the heater never did work in the snows of Yosemite in early April......we kept warm at nights in other ways! Would I want one? Never, even if I was given one!

Classic style and good for posing but I think I would prefer to spend another £10k and get a new VW California and use it

I have had three split screen VW campers, bought my first one in 1977 with a years MOT for £250. Wish I still had it now. (y)

As much as i love old bikes and cars my mechanical knowledge and ability are very limited hence i only have the one, my E-Type V12 Roadster. Other than general checking of levels anything and everything that needs doing on it it's of to the garage and the mechanical doctors.

Anything "Classic" is going to need constant "input". I am 5 years into the restoration of a 1971 Triumph Herald 13/60, I now have a "rolling chassis", to which I am currently fitting an electric PAS unit. (Horror of horrors to the purists!!). I am more than aware that if/when finished it will still need regular TLC!. The high priced ones, are basically for posers, All the others are owned and used by hobbyists who know that they will always need work!.

They look cool but they are mostly for show. I nearly bought a split screen Vdub 40 years ago as a first camper, we bought a Fiat Amigo instead.

In my case you are wrong about the poser bit. I am a genuine classic car fan I just don't have the ability to work on them. There have been times i have been embarrassed parking up when people want to talk about the car (it's almost concourse). I enjoy driving it. In fact it's in the garage now having a few bit's done.

Triumph Herald 13/60 was the first car i bought my wife (then girlfriend) 45 years ago. White, H reg. She loved it. She crashed it into a small garden wall in the 2nd week of owning it. She was gutted. She used to call it "Happy Face".

Ive had 3 over the years, one was in magazines and cards, 5 people struggle to camp in one so sold it and bought bigger vans:giggle:,the vw scene got gready and not as much fun as it was so sold all my aircooled stuff never looked back. Its the samba's that are worth the big money and early ones.
