I know it's possible to buy cheaper, but we are really dubious about cutting holes in the MH, and we have not yet found any one willing to fit without supplying. ( if that makes sense). I have read reviews and it looks as if Webasto are noisy. Lots of you have had them fitted so up to date reviews please.

Not much in it Casper46. I have an Eberspacher on my boat and it works ok. But have heard many good reports of Webasto. At the prices they are now, I would get a Chinese copy for £150 and fit it myself. I expect the German ones are made in China now anyway, as many branded products are. But I do not know if that is the case. If so, quality control and components will be better monitored by the German brands, but its a huge price difference now.

I had an Eberspacher for 10 years. It was already 5 years old when I bought the Westy so it worked for 15 years without problems. It was a bit noisy on starting and at the same time drew a big current from the leisure battery. Very frugal diesel consumption and quiet once the set temperature in the van had been reached.

Never had a Webasto one so I couldn't compare them.

Now I have a Truma Combi D that Eberspacher had a hand in designing. The Truma is much quieter but seems to drink more diesel than the previous Eberspacher.

If you want quiet I can recommend .
https://www.kuranda.co.uk/shop/?filter_brand=wallas if you have room .
You can go to there showrooms and see them working , we ran one for 4 thousand hours before major service needed never got that out of any other heater except Toyotomi Toyoset now unfortunately no longer made in the diesel blower types .
This information may be of no use to you but may be to others,I have no affiliation with the company as I have long retired from the 12v heating system game. PS if you are looking for cheap don’t look this is a generalisation aimed at no-one I am not trying to offend.

I fitted a new eberspacher D1 about 6 years back, it works very well and as been said with very little
Fuel used, I also fitted both intake and exhaust silencers and a special rubber mounted fuel pump holder,
All of these reduce the noise generated by it to acceptable levels IMO,
The fuel pump makes a ticking noise when running but with the new mount is now unobtrusive,

Ooh, Wallas. I bought a diesel hob with built in heater lid from Kuranda some years back. It was brilliant (on a boat). Wallas make seriously high quality stuff, but it might cost a bit more.

I can only agree with SpeedyDux and Ivorantony. I fitted a second hand eberspacher blown air diesel heater to my old self build VW T4. I fitted both the inlet and exhaust silencers, as well as a rubber mounted fuel pump. On startup, there was a bit of a pull on the battery for a short while and it sounded a little bit like a jet engine. It was barely audible inside the van and not that noisy outside. It barely sipped the diesel and warmed the van up very quickly. Once up to temperature, it slowed down and was very quiet.

I used the heater for about 5 years before I sold the van. It was great for warming the van up in the mornings and defrosting the windscreen. I don’t think that there is much difference between the eberspacher and the webasto, but the webasto’s always seemed dearer

Cheers

Thank you for your replies.
We took the MH to a registered Webasto dealer yesterday, but it seemed very limited as to where he could fit the heater and it seemed a silly amount of money to spend if we were not getting what we wanted. The logic now is to buy a Chinese copy but we will still need it fitting. Our auto electrician knows nothing about diesel heaters, can anyone suggest anyone in the Yorkshire/Lincolnshire area who would fit one for us?

i think you will struggle to find anyone willing to fit a chinese one due to professional liability they are not difficult to fit and the wiring is extremely easy as it comes with a loom that basically needs live and ground best if its direct to the battery

We've got a Webasto Dualtop which provides both hot air and hot water. It isn't silent, except when running on EHU which it can do if there is enough power available - you can select 1 or 2Kw, but as others have said you do need the silencers and the installation needs to isolate the pump. It's nearly 7 years old and has been fault free.

I have a Webesto, very quiet and reliable. Draws a lot of Amps on start up and fan draws about 8 Amps. We are more than happy with it.
