Hi ,ive a accordo 120 70 plate and I’m keen to make it last as long as possible,so with that in mind has anyone waxed or treated the underneath of there m/h ,I was thinking of a couple of tins of protective wax aerosols any ideas anyone, thanks Roy

I've not used the aerosols as I figured it would be messier than the brush on underseal which I have used with some success!

Yes worth a look at,thanks

I've never done it myself, but had it done professionally 9 years ago on my Transit based M/H which has yet to show any signs of rust at all. Success methinks! Strangely enough, just yesterday I went with a friend to have a quote to have her 11 year old MX5 treated. I was somewhat surprised how rusty the underside was and the complete lack of any rust preventative applied at the factory. "Treat, cure, prevent" came in at £2500 + VAT on what, outwardly, looked like a mint, low mileage car. Her MX5 was rustier than my 31 year old Austin Metro with it's 14500 dry miles!
I think it's one of those jobs that I'd prefer to have done "properly"!

I’m no expert, but on older vehicles you have to be careful you’re not just covering up the damage that’s already there, and holding in the damp/rust.
I think you’re better off plastering it with waste oil once a year.

If it is an Al-Ko chassis they warn against treating them. If it is a Fiat chassis it will be galvanised under the paint so doesn't need treating.

Does that apply to Peugeot too, Lenny?

I spent a month fabricating sheet metal and welding my sons MX5 back together. They only treat the front of the car not the back end.

They also drain the water off the hood down through the rear of the body into the rear of the sills. There is meant to be a tube to take the water away but I never found one in the sons MX5.

His was in good external condition but I needed two reels of welding wire on the underside.

I sprayed lithium grease on our scooter rack underneath and any other exposed bits, marvellous stuff, never dries just goes dirty 👍

Avoid underseal and any other substance that sets. Rust will work it's way behind it and you won't see it till it's too late. Don't ask me how I know.

I now use fluid film after doing a test with it on a piece of scrap steel kept outdoors for over a year.

Don't take my word for it, have a search on youtube for fluid film.

I have applied Waxoil to our MH from new on the underbody and am very pleased with the lack of corrosion evident. It is coming up to 7 years old and I reapply the waxoil every two years.

Did the Augusta with Dinatrol in the first week from delivery..... didn't do the galvanized AlKo chassis but all the cross beams and the area where the Sevel Chassis bolts onto the AlKo bits.

12 years on the only part that rusted is the sump on the engine, it get some hammer from road grit. I slap oil on that at every oil change. Fingers crossed

Careful with underseal treatments even the waxoyl stuff it can have and adverse effect on many plastics and coatings. I am fairly sure the the instructions on the container say avoid plastic panels and plastic parts ( thats without me going into my garage to check).
if your motorhome is anything like mine the underside is littered with all sorts of plastic pipes, sheathing, covers and so forth.

What’s wrong with old engine oil. I worked with a chap, who couldn’t drive, his wife drove their Austin allegro, they had it for 20+ years. Rust very little.

he changed the oil twice a year and used it to coat the underneath wheel arches etc, and having drilled a couple of holes inside the sills.

Dinatrol all over mine. Great stuff.
Dinatrol is brilliant if you do it from new or nearly new. But once rust has set in it suffers the same as underseal in that rust can work behind it.

The van I just sent to scrap yard due to rust had a numerous experiments over the years to keep the rust under control.

The only two successful experiments were cutting out and welding in new galvanised steel then using a high zinc primer. The other was the fluid film.
The dinatrol was fantastic in places where there was only a bit of surface rust, but in areas near where it had gone already the rust just worked behind it.

I used to use waxoyl on the bongo a Japanese grey import with no rust profing. I used 20% white spirit to get into the nooks and cranies using a garden spray. Beware it is bloody messy mask brake areas plastic and tarmac it will desolve and make a mess of your drive. Regarding MX5 the older ones may be Japanese domestic market grey imports and as such have no under treatments.
Edit
Just checked bongo still taxed and on road 8 yrs after now 23yrs old

Did it when we got our previous motorhome and done it with the Delaware we now have. Did use aerosols and put loads of dust sheets down....however...got covered with as much as I put on the truck! That aside...Its protection brings peace of mind and its a preference i have always believed in. It's not for every body i know, but neither is owning a motor home. Have fun doing it with what ever product you use .

Picture shows ours after I had done it and just leaving it to get myself washed off with Turps!
Rest assured.......Every little bit helps

Mx5s are renowned for rusting. I don't know how they get away with it.
