My last word here is I have seen damage done to vans due to ladders . I've been in construction for 45 years and cannot recal how many injuries some really really serious to experienced people let alone alone people who think using cushions to pipe insulation is applicable. It's just as easy to change life from a low height as it is from great height.
And that's setting aside damaging you pride and joy.

Get proper equipment or leave the job to the professionals.

I have seriously considered buying aluminium scaffold for this job but have been put off by the price!

I bought some aluminium scaffold last year for work, has come in handy this last week working on the van
I used to just wing it but the thought of missing some great trips due to injury made me invest
safety first

I should have added my spreader is not for leaning the ladder on the van but to protect it from scratching as the ladder is so close to camper.

I have a second hand folding warehouse platform Steps a bit like these :

For a genral wash or polish / waxing the sides the folding lower platform is fine.
