i'd suggest rationing i.e. once a week, a bobble hat or an Alice bandOff grid power for Campervans.
if we went off grid and my wife wished to use an hairdryer and straightners every morning if we got a 4 kw invertor petrol generator could we plug the van into that to run the power whilst she used them.
Mrs Poppy Camper says one reason she likes to go away in van in she can chuck her drier/curlers/straighteners and let her hair do what it wants and adopt the rugged look...which I MUST confess appeals more to me than a perfectly coiffeured bonce.absolutely the generator would work but is not going to make you popular. Most of us have loads of solar, a decent battery bank and inverter. Lithium batteries are way more expensive but will give far more usable capacity. Old lead batteries are cheaper but can only be discharged 50% without shortening their service life whereas you get 80% usable capacity from Lithium
Better than hairdryers and straighteners is a trip to the hairdresser for a short haircut. Anything that produces heat or powers a motor sucks the energy out of batteries very fast
Do you tow your 3 phase Genny?!You can’t beat a generator for the hairdryer, they seem to want 3 phase electric supply for the ladies hairdryer. If on a campsite you might not be able to use one, but wild camping you can do what you want there is no rules as the ones who want to wild camping are always saying is why they do it, not to avoid camp site fees
she'd be better off the get a hair cutOff grid power for Campervans.

or
would we be better off getting a
a solar panel or panels say 150 watt each and the equipment for that with 2x 100 lithium batteries.
please advise would be appreciated not sure which way to go to be honest.
Especially in Scotland where the sun always shines, hahaIf you go down the Genny route get a quiet type, eg Honda (expensive) or another quiet type. Personally I would go down the Solar/lithium/ inverter route. You can then off grid to your hearts content. We have this system.

I changed to a less high maintenance haircut because of this - wash and goabsolutely the generator would work but is not going to make you popular. I take it you know how much a 4kw generator weighs and have the space to transport it in the vanOff grid power for Campervans.
