Carthago C-Line I 50
Exp
Since 2009
Back in 2015 our Carthago C-Line was fitted with the VB Full (4C) Air Suspension. The kit at the time did not include the accumulator / reservoir air tank and in my ignorance I did not have it fitted as an extra. Later I was told that on the C-Line there is in any case no suitable location for it. I have now been told that my system can accept the kit and yes it is quite possible to have it retrofitted. If I can I would like to have it done but just where does the tank go?

I think ours is up under the cab, just about below the seats.
If you wait a while I’ll nip out and slither under the van and check.........it’s raining at the mo so give me a bit of time.

S.A.P. DONCASTER WILL BE ABLE TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION I’M SURE.
ASK FOR MICK OR DARREN👍

Slithering completed.
The tank, which doesn’t look like a tank, is mounted between the fuel tank and engine.
Externally it looks like An aluminium box.

Clarky Many thanks. I will now slither in and see if the space on mine is suitably vacant.

Yes!
Some of the braided protective covering has frayed a bit where it rubs against something.
If I can rouse myself from the general lockdown lethargy I must get under there and tidy it up...................mañana.

Clarky Just taken a couple more pics of mine. Is my manifold the same as yours? Mine does not appear to have a spare port for a tank connection.

There appears to be spare space behind the fuel tank?

Clarky Dorset Diver are you happy with the 4C air thinking on having it fitted to our Malibu cheers

Very happy with it. It works really well and makes the ride smooth, quiet, and comfortable. A friend described it as a magic carpet ride.

Without the air reservoir air tank mine relies entirely on the pump adjusting the height and ride so it has to work much harder than it would if the tank was providing assistance.

Don't worry about the tank though, as I understand it, it is a standard fit now.

Just had another crawl under the van and found the air tank/accumulator.
It’s mounted inside and alongside the main chassis rail halfway between the front n/s locker and the gas locker, just behind the exhaust outlet.
Sorry, can’t see the manifold on the box of gubbins as there are so many cables and pipes running past it and I can’t get close enough to see.

It's an expensive option but if you are intending to keep the van for a longish time it’s worthwhile.
It does improve the ride a lot but it’s still not as smooth as I’d hoped it would be. I suppose the hard tyres don’t help.
The biggest difference was that the front suspension used to 'crash' on hitting potholes and that completely stopped, which was a huge improvement.
Having the air and levelling jacks together makes life much easier and more comfortable.

Richard, I run my Michelins Argilis at 65 psi from and 75 psi rear and get a good ride especially when travelling with full water, etc. which is most of the time. At lighter loads it tends to ride harder and really needs the tyres softened. What do you use?

Clarky

Richard, is that on the nearside or offside of the vehicle? Sorry I've just seen that you have said n/s. I have also checked mine and there is no space there. I think it will have to go on the o/s in front of the step.

There should be space between the main chassis and another smaller rail that runs fore/aft.
The tank is quite slim and doesn’t project below the chassis. The only other thing below the floor there is the square underfloor locker just inside the hab door but that is well over towards the off side.
Unless your van is a different layout to ours of course.

That doesn't look like the tank to me it's normally a cylindrical tank and I thought the VB one was blue.
My Goldsmitth one is black and about a ¼ of the way along the chassis.

Carthago's have much more clear space than Hymers underneath so I would think there is plenty of room.

Do try and keep up Lenny HB.

Mine are about the same although the fronts are a bit lower than yours.
The Carthago manual gives more realistic pressures than the daft ones Michelin insist on.

Clarky Lenny HB

Richard / Lenny, do you find having the tank improves performance?
Wouldn't know as didn't know you could get without the tank.
Must help the battery as the compressor takes a lot of power and the tank will be full when you turn off the engine.
We don't have Jack's so we use it for leveling.

A good point.

We also use ours for leveling during which the compressor chunters for a minute or two. Does the tank reservoir help in that respect?

Haven’t had the system without the tank but I understand that having the reserve of air means that the system responds faster on startup. No waiting for the compressor to pump up the air bags as the pressure is already there.

Richard.
